    Synopsis
Every year Andy and Jonathan Hillstrand set out in their boat, Time Bandit, to brave the 60-foot waves of the Bering Sea, risking death to bring home a catch of Alaskan king crabs. Written with Newsweek journalist Malcolm Macpherson, TIME BANDIT is a harrowing adventure and an ode to the beauty and harshness of the sea. It brings readers into the hearts of men who hold one of the world's most dangerous jobs, and who are only truly at home on the deck of a ship.

    Publisher's Note
The stars of the Discovery Channel series Deadliest Catch detail their lives as fishermen in the Bering Sea, recounting the daily perils they confront, from gale-force winds and ice floes to huge waves and serious injury, as they hunt for crabs in the waters off Alaska, as well as the family legacy that led to their adventure-filled life on the high seas. 100,000 first printing.

“Many brave hearts are asleep in the deep, so beware, beware,” goes the chorus of an old sailors' sing-along that celebrates the allure and danger of the seafaring life. But make no mistake-there truly is much to beware for those who are drawn to risk their lives and seek their fortunes upon the waves. And perhaps none take more chances than the men and women who brave the tempestuous, bountiful waters of the Bering Sea. Season after season, they bond and battle with its icy depths, determined to reap yet one more rewarding harvest while eluding the ever-present threat of sudden, certain death. And among the rapidly diminishing ranks of these die-hard salts, brothers Andy and Johnathan Hillstrand have forged a reputation as fierce masters of their treacherous, enthralling trade. If you've watched their exploits on TV's Deadliest Catch, you've only scratched the surface. To read Time Bandit is to step into their skins, smell the sea air, feel the frigid wind, and know with all your senses the exhilarating, and terrifying life on the edge.

Natives of tiny, fishing hamlet, Homer, Alaska; sons of a hard-bitten, highly successful fisherman; and born with brine in their blood, the Hillstrand boys couldn't imagine a life without a swaying deck underfoot and a harvest of mighty Alaskan king crabs waiting to be pulled from the ocean floor. In pursuit of their daily catch, the brothers brave ice floes and heaving waves 60 feet high, the perils of 1000-lb steel traps thrown about by the punishing wind, and the constant menace of the open, hungry water.

Even the brothers' downtime on land-where the deadly realities of the unforgiving sea are never far from their minds-is lived as if borrowed: fast and hard, haunted by the knowledge that the next season at sea could end asleep in the deep.

Here is the Hillstrands' own heartfelt hymn to the brutally hard, gloriously independent, and mysteriously soul-satisfying life that has earned them their daily bread and defined their existence. By turns raucous and reflective, exhilarating and anguished, enthralling, suspenseful, and wise, Time Bandit chronicles a larger-than-life love affair as old as civilization itself-a love affair between striving, willful man and inscrutable, enduring nature.

    Time well spent

As a fan of Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch" I recieved my copy as a gift. Once I started to read it, I could not put it down. The love the Hillstrand family has for each other is clearly evident - even through the horseplay and hard times. Being a bit of a hellion in my younger days made me appreciate the close knit ties the brothers have, and what it takes to bring us city folks a plate of crablegs for dinner.

This is excellent reading for anyone who has ever been on a boat larger than a canoe - or wishes to fish one day.

A Biased review of a great book!

As told by the Co-Captains, Jonathan and Andy Hillstrand. This book is well written and really gives you an insight to life on a crab boat during crab season. It goes a bit more in depth than Deadliest Catch does, and it won't leave you disappointed.

First of all, I am a Deadliest Catch diehard fanatic. So I go into this review with a love for the show and the crab fishing lifestyle.
I always enjoy the Time Bandit crew and Jonathan and Andy Hillstrand, when it comes their time on the show to have the spotlight on them.
The book itself takes you into the past and present with the Hillstrand brothers and their father, who raised them in that lifestyle. They show their love and respect for the father in this book. Their lives and their dedication to what they do, is in most part, according to them, directly related to what their father instilled in them growing up. The book takes you back and forth, from then to now, on what it is and was like to grow up in Homer, Alaska. To go fishing in the Bering sea, never knowing if it will be your last trip out. The two brothers that operate the Time Bandit, Jonathan and Andy, are what you would expect a fisherman to be. Rough, tough, hard working, wicked sense of humor, practical joke players, etc. They make just the average guy want to go do what they do. Its a rough life for sure, even harder on their families at home. But for the most part, the wives go into it knowing that a good bit of the time, their husbands will not be there. The book flows well from page to page. In fact, to me it ended too quick. I didn`t want it to end when I saw I was getting close to the last few pages. To me, thats the sign of a good book and a good writer. When you want the story to go on, it leaves you hanging for more. Hopefully they will write another book within a couple of years, and they can add in their relationship/friendship with now deceased Captain Phil Harris. When I saw Jonathan tear up and cry when Capt. Phil was coming back from his stroke, that showed me what a real man is, even a rough fisherman like Jonathan. These men do bond out at sea and their lives inre dependant on the other fisherman out there with them.
If you are considering buying this book, consider no more. Buy it and you will not regret one second of it.

We love Deadliest catch & the Time Bandit.
The book was awesome, the price was reasonable.
It was also good to read some of the family history.
If they write another, I buy that also.

If you are a fan of the Discovery channel show, you won't find too many startling insights to what happens, but this is a fascinating read about how a family creates and lives within a business that carries a risk of mortality with it.
