There's only so much of her huge catalog that can be represented by a single-disc collection, but within those constraints, TINA! does an excellent job of showing the eclectic Turner's various sides and sounds. There's a little bit of everything here, from her work with then-husband Ike (the sweaty, rock-inflected soul shouter "River Deep, Mountain High," the gritty, funky "Nutbush City Limits") to her '80s days as a purveyor of sleek, sexy pop (the ubiquitous, slinky "What's Love Got to Do With It," the elegant "Private Dancer"). Along the way there are some live cuts that demonstrate Turner's skill at working up a crowd, and for the faithful who've already got all the old stuff, there are a couple of brand-new tracks. The new songs, "It Would Be a Crime" and "I'm Ready," sound utterly contemporary, but they still preserve that soulful fire.
