Upgrading to Premiere from Series 2 Dual Tuner
Created: 02/03/11
I got my box from Ebay for ~$70, for that price, it was worth it just to get the digital signals and the extra disk space. In general I really like
this box. The TIVO interface is still basically the same. Like they say, it may not be a perfect interface, but it is the best out there.
The new ability to program Season Passes from the TIVO website is great (which they would do the same with WishList). And the ability to move Season Pases
from one Tivo to Another (on the same account) makes it easy to upgrade.
Good:
- Hold many time more hours of video at the same resolution
- HDMI output
- Support Netflix.
. Netflix Instant Queue shows up as a group in the "Now Showing".
. All Netflix Instant Videos is searched in the "Swivel Search"
. Remembers the last viewed location of Netflix videos.
- Supports a skip forward remote key.
- Supports an SATA external HD.
- Supports a USB/USB Wireless keyboard
- Responds much faster than the Series 2 to remote commands.
Cons:
- Does not support modulated (Cable ch3) output (not an issue for most users)
- Netflix Issue.
. The 'Netflix Instant Queue' videos show up as lines of text, listed by
titles, with the artwork of the highlighted video on the other side
of the screen. Doesn't have do the fancy interface you see on other
devices like the Xbox.
. It rebooted a couple of time when entering the Netflix Instant Queue.
. It occasionally exits a Netflix video for no reason (but it will return back to the same place)
- No longer supports the go-to the End/Beginning as a primary button on the remote.
- Doesn't support many free video delivery websites.
Would be nice:
- To have a third tuner.
- Would love for it to support streaming video directly from Major networks websites.
- For Netflix to also support the USB keyboard (currently only TIVO menus/searches support the USB keyboard text entry).
- More Games, they still have the same 3 game on it they had on the Series 2. A few more would be nice.
- I would love the TIVO service to have an option to be free but supported by streaming adds at the bottom of the screen.

TiVi Premiere
Created: 31/10/10
The transition from HD cable box to TiVo Premiere was easy as far a replacement was concerned. Swapped out the digital audio and RGB component video cables for an HDMI cable; connected the cable coax to the new box and connected the network cable. After several day's of confusion (MANY levels of menus) I'm starting to get the hang of the TiVo. The manuals are very helpful and once you accept the interface and noises it makes, all will go better. The audio and video quality are excellent and so far it has "suggested" several programs that I would have missed. The problem is that I'm now inclined to increase the amount of time in front of the TV ... not good!
Excellent product; compact; quiet (since it is always on); menus are abundant.
The only real problem I have had so far is getting my Logitech Harmony (universal controller) to interface. The manufacturer has instructions for selecting the Tivo address, etc, but I am still trying to get the Harmony to change channels in Live TV.

This is absolutely the best DVR you can buy!

The TiVo is by far the best DVR available. The Premiere is no exception. I have been suffering with my cable companies DVR for the past couple of year and I have been through 5 of them during that time. The TiVo in comparison is just more reliable and user friendly. One of the things that I forgot about the TiVo is that when you are fast forwarding through commercials and you see the show you are watching and you push the play button, it automatically goes back a few seconds taking into account your reaction time. In most cases you don't have to rewind to pickup at the beginning of the show.
The Premiere unit offers Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube and Amazon Downloads. I can only offer opinion on the Netflix and Youtube interfaces.
YouTube - I connected a cordless keyboard to the back of TiVo and it worked fine for doing searches on You Tube. I did a few searches and watched a few videos but that is about all. The quality is about what you would expect on YouTube. It is a nice feature to have and I'm sure will be great to use in the future. The interface works well with my wireless keyboard as I could navigate completely without reaching for the remote.
NetFlix - I'm mixed about the Netflix interface. I also own a PS3 that I can view Netflix on and the TiVo interface with Netflix is very limited in comparison. You can only see what is in your queue and when you are looking at a series there is no way of know what episode you viewed last. But I have to say when viewing a video using the TiVo the video quality is better. I flipped back and forth while watching the same episode of Battlestar Galactica both units connect with HDMI cables and the video quality of the TiVo is just a bit better. Plus I can use my TiVo remote to control the video which is nice.
The only other downside of the TiVo is the cost. You either have to pay quite a bit up front for the Lifetime service or you have to pay $20 a month. The price and the limited Netflix interface are the only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars.

Great interface but buggy and sluggish performance
Created: 29/05/10
I upgraded from a series 2 Tivo with an expiring 3 year contract to the Tivo Premiere with lifetime service. The series 2 was not hdmi compatible and therefore suffered from lackluster video.
One of the things that initially attracted to the premiere was the sleek looking box. It's overall dimnesions are less than series 2 and looks a whole lot nicer on my component shelf. It's entirely black except for the silver colored Tivo character and the only way you know it's working are the various colored led lights on the front bezel. However, this is one of it's shortcomings because unlike a cable box there is no clock or channel indicator anywhere.

The Device was completely as advertised. I love it, it works, and I couldn't be happier! TiVo customer service is flawless even though it was an ebay purchase. If I could do it all over again I would. Only complaint is sometimes on the HD view of the menu Netflix, Hulu, etc don't show up but I can switch to standard definition to view them and I still receive HD video and audio. Great product!
