FInally, a Great Macro Lens built like a Tank
Created: 13/10/10
I have ALWAYS admired (and owned when possible) Tokina lenses for two main reasons. First, they NEVER BUILD CRAP so their quality-to-consumer is really high. Second, they don't build 'girly-man' lenses which is to say, if you are looking for a "walk-around lens that is light weight enough so you can satisfy your need to be the type of instant gratification snap-shooter that many define as 'digital photographer'" then this lens may or may not be for you.
For me it is plenty light but I also shoot Tokina's 80-200 AT-X Pro f/2.8 that IS NOT for the weak of wrist/arm/shoulder/back among us. It is solidly built with METAL components and is most definitely a hand full.
However, the more I handle the 100mm macro from Tokina, the less it differs from other comparable macros in that length. What I like most is that EVERY shot I have taken with it so far has been as Tack sharp as I set out to make it. Even portraits shot with it are outstanding. I'd put this lens up against anything out there, even the 'L' series of my preferred camera manufacturer. The Tokina may not beat the Canon in all categories, but when you can get a Tokina for around $350-$00 dollars and the L series 100 for $1000+....well, I say Go Tokina!

VERY SHARP. FOCUS OK.

THIS LENS IS SHARP. I MEAN VERY SHARP. I WOULD PUT IT UP AGAINST TAMRON'S 90MM MACRO. BUT THE MOMENTS YOU NEED TO FOCUS QUICK, YOU MAY MISS IT. CANON'S USM WOULD BE REALLY NICE, BUT FOR THE PRICE, YOU ARE GETTING PRO QUALITY OPTICS. I DO LIKE THE MANUAL/AUTO FOCUS RING ALOT. ITS HELLA FAST TO SWITCH TO MANUAL. OVERALL, A VERY SOLID BUILT LENS, JUST COULD USE IS (IMAGE STABILIZATION), AND USM (ULTA SONIC MOTOR), BUT THAT WOULD DOUBLE THE PRICE SO I'LL TAKE IT AS IS!

Excellent quality lens - Better than than name brands!

This is an excellent, affordable, life size macro lens. The body is an all metal contruction. The lens is EXTREMEMLY sharp, even wide open. The clutch mechanism for changing from AF to MF is brilliant. I can't see any good reason to pay twice as much for camera brand macro lenses when this performs the way it does and costs 1/2 as much. It also doubles as a great mid tele and portrait lens.

Great lens from Tokina! Autofocus is excellent. Bokeh is very good. A fantastic sub for a Nikkor glass.
