They provided much of the impetus for the ska revival of the late seventies, though their highly individual music defies any sort of true categorization. Musical development was a Madness constant, and this historical progression is documented on TOTAL MADNESS: THE VERY BEST OF. As difficult as it is to encapsulate the group's work on one disc, the album succeeds admirably, and serves as the perfect primer for the woefully under-informed Yankee shores.Much to its credit, TOTAL MADNESS manages to cover a large amount of time, from the classic cover and general ska anthem "One Step Beyond" to the sophisticated strains of the touching "Yesterday's Men" and the stirring "One Better Day." The KEEP MOVING period is heavily covered here, with the sweeping "The Sun And The Rain," the near religious experience that is "Wings Of A Dove" and the uncharacteristically political "Michael Caine." And yes, in case you were wondering, it's got "Our House."
