Here, he clashes with maverick director Paul Verhoeven's take on Philip K. Dick's classic short story, reinterpreted for the screen as a big-budget sci-fi vehicle for Arnold Schwarzenneger. Goldsmith perfectly captures every nuance of the experience as Quaid bounds from one calamitous chase to another, planet-hopping his way through various forms of malice and mayhem.Goldsmith's main title track is an apprehensive tour de force of tick-tock strings, electronic effects, and stuttering horns swept up in the grandeur of Verhoeven's faux Martian skies and Quaid's fevered dreams. When he's on, as he is here, Goldsmith understands the nature of motion and the drama inherent in tension and release. During the climactic symphonic rush of "The Chase," the listener invents his own film to accompany the broad streaks of trumpet and brass whizzing below the composer's sprinting bursts of percussion. To paraphrase Quaid, Goldsmith's score is the best mindmelt yet.
