And it's easy to imagine that their hometown itself, Anaheim, California (home to Disneyland), may have played a part in forming the band's schizophrenic, high-energy sound, which took TRAGIC KINGDOM, the band's second album, on a slow, steady ride up the pop charts. It finally hit No. 1 in December 1996, 14 months after it was released. This is ska-punk-new wave-dance music, with instrumentation ranging from hardcore guitar to mellow, reggae-style horns. Singer Gwen Stefani's voice is by turns peppy, almost adolescent ("Spiderwebs") and emotionally wailing; she can sound a lot like Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano ("Just A Girl"). When Stefani sings, "I'm just a girl, little ol' me/Don't let me out of your sight," she does so without a hint of girlishness; her voice is all attitude, with a warbling edge of melodrama. For the most part, these are happy songs, though No Doubt do get philosophical on "Different People": "Once in a while I sit back/And think about the planet/Most of the time I trip on it/To kick back and think of how massive it all is/And how many others are on it."

Editorial Reviews
...a platinum-blond peach of a female singer, Gwen Stefani, who breaks up the asexual baggy-shorts-and-balloon pants monotony of alt-nation guy rock....No Doubt have a spry, white-suburban take on ska and Blondie-esque pop...

Tragic Kingdom

Created: 26/02/09
No Doubt's 1995 release, Tragic Kingdom, brought Southern California's ska scene to a national stage while elevating the band to star status. An irresistible mix of reggae, punk, and power pop, Tragic Kingdom scored several hits, among them "Spiderwebs," "Just a Girl," and "Don't Speak." Singer Gwen Stefani's looks made the group MTV shoo-ins, but her soaring voice is the real star, as evidenced by such songs as "Happy Now?"--a classic you'll-regret-you-dumped-me anthem that recalls Blondie--and the bouncy "Sunday Morning." Despite recurring themes of pain and regret, Tragic Kingdom manages to somehow feel sunny throughout.

Gwennie Gwen Gwen!

Created: 06/02/06
Excellent selection of some of the best music ever put together by No Doubt and their lucious lead singer Gwen Stefani. This is the CD that introduced me to the melodic sounds and groovy beats of this quintessential band. It became, for me and thousands of others, the soundtrack of my high school years. On this CD you will be blasted by the vocals and tickled by the tunes of this out of sight band. Very much a precursor to Gwen's breakout hit Love Angel Music Baby.
Until next time, "I'll be walking in the spiderwebs so leave a message and I'll call you back."

Tragic Kingdom is an all time best

Created: 19/02/10
I have replaced my Tragic Kingdom for my 7th time, and it is worth every penny. I am a No Doubt fan through and through, but this is BY FAR, their best album and Gwen's best stuff. This is music that will never die or go out of style as far as I am concerned. I can listen to it from beginning to end, unlike most albums.

Great Album will never lose it's appeal

Created: 01/08/07
This is one of the best Albums I have ever listened to. From the sad "Don't Speak" To the fed up "Just a Girl" Gwen Stefani sings what every girl is feeling at one point or another. This is actually third time I purchased this album, becuase it travels with me all the time and tends to get lost or left behinf in my rental cars. I recomend "Tragic Kingdom" to anyone
