Treasure Planet (DVD, 2003)

Ron Clements, John Musker|Theatrical release: 2002 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

In this adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's TREASURE ISLAND, Disney presents a fantastic space adventure. Jim Hawkins (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a teenage boy with a taste for adventure who seems to always be in trouble, much to the chagrin of his hardworking mother (Laurie Metcalf). But when he comes into possession of a high-tech map leading to Treasure Planet where an ancient cache of jewels and gold lies buried, it's like a dream come true. His mother's friend Doctor Doppler (David Hyde Pierce) arranges for a ship, and the two set sail, traversing the universe on course for the treasure. Captain Amelia (Emma Thompson), a domineering feline, is in charge of a rough-and-tumble crew of odd creatures, who may have their own designs on the treasure. Jim is placed under the supervision of John Silver (Brian Murray), the cook, who is both his father figure and his adversary. Slowly but surely the ship makes its way toward its destination, as Jim comes of age, learning to follow his heart, do what's right, and be a leader. With stunning computer animation that combines both space and sea elements, TREASURE PLANET called upon the skills of 350 artists, animators, and technicians. The result is dazzling, colorful, and fast-moving, with some very realistic-looking creatures including variations on spiders, robots, and whales.

One of the best movies Disney ever made...

Created: 08/02/07
Don't be fooled by the preview. Although he might look like just another angsty teenaged hero defying the odds and winning an unlikely victory, Jim isn't an annoying Aladdin. Sure, some of his motivations aren't the best, but he learns as he goes and he truly wants to do what's right even as he leaps into the unknown and follows his dream.

The music is good, the characters interesting if a bit underdeveloped, and the scenery gorgeous. Interstellar galleys flying under the power of solar sails are such a wonderful and awe-inspiring concept, and Disney animates them beautifully.

Bringing the novel forward into a futuristic setting lends new interest to R.L. Stevenson's tale without sacrificing the richness of the unfolding adventure, and it's a pleasure to watch Silver and Jim develop a relationship and then cope with the way it complicates their conflicting goals.

I won't claim it's the best movie ever made, but I do suggest it to anyone looking for a Disney movie that stands out from the rest, and an adventure brewing with just the right combinmation of sweetness, excitement, and fun, kept interesting with the addition of a darker aspect not often included in Disney: a character with ambiguous allignment - neither good nor evil, but capable of both.

Fantastic Adventure

This is a fantastic movie choice for any family intrigued by treasure hunting. "Treasure Planet" blends the traditional treasure hunt with futuristic space travel. The characters and concepts are intriguing, humorous, well-animated, and there is a good sprinkling of high-flying action for adrenaline junkies. Boys who think they're "too cool" for Disney will enjoy this film!

Treasure Planet

This is a very family oriented tale. I always loved reading "Treasure Island". I love the way the story is set into the future and how a young man deals with the problem of being with a single parent. Children can really relate to Jim's confusion. I also like how he is able to resolve the conflict inside of him with the help of someone who makes him take a good look at himself. Most teens I have talked to love this movie and can relate to it. I bought this copy for my daughter who was leaving home. It is one of her favorites.

My kids love it

I'm rating this as "good". It's fairly entertaining, it has the power and budget of Disney behind it, and my kids would watch it twice a day if they could. In fact, I think they did the first week or two. I saw snippets here and there before finally sitting down and watching the whole movie. The movie is based on Treasure Island and has a fun mix of traditional pirate-y goodness mixed with tech and space and alien creatures. And there is gunplay, is that even allowed in movies anymore? Some of it works, some, not so much, but there's nothing here that makes the experience unpleasant or jarring. You'll be entertained.

Great adventure movie for adults as well as kids.

I love the futuristic adventure aspect of the movie. Jim is your typical teenager when he happens upon a map that reveals the location of the Treasure Planet. Follow him on his hunt for the treasure. There isn't anything I can think of that I don't like about his movie. It has been my favorite since I first saw it. I bought it on eBay because I couldn't find it in stores anywhere. I love scavenger hunt movies and this fits right in.
