Produced by Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson, the group's immensely likable debut feels like a West Coast country-rock relic from the early '70s, juggling no less than four lead singer/songwriters and the ability to spin harmonies into the kind of warm summer gold that makes listeners feel like they're in the presence of longtime friends. Truth & Salvage Co. feel right at home, whether they're operating as the best local bar band in town ("See Her") or spilling out of the grease-stained Waffle House speakers at 1:00 a.m. ("Old Piano"). The group's obvious love for the Band, the Eagles, the Allman Brothers, and any other outfit that ever made you want to roll down the windows, light a smoke, and leave it all behind seems odd considering the members' eclectic histories (the Moldy Peaches, Old Pike, Ben Folds Five, Jack Johnson, Squirrel Nut Zippers, and My Morning Jacket), but there's a certain level of honesty (and a complete lack of irony) emanating from standout cuts like "Hail Hail," "101," and "Brothers, Sons & Daughters" that suggests a long tenure in the music business and a complete disregard for its ruthless, unforgiving machinery. ~ James Christopher Monger
