Two-Lane Blacktop (DVD, 2007, 2-Disc Set)

Monte Hellman, James Taylor, Dennis Wilson|Theatrical release: 1971 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Cult film director Monte Hellman follows up his legendary westerns THE SHOOTING and RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND with another bona fide classic, this time set on the paved highways of early 1970s America. Making their acting debuts, musicians Dennis Wilson and James Taylor play a pair of drag-racing drifters who battle against willing competitors all along the back roads of America, encountering a wild cast of characters. After stopping for lunch one afternoon, Taylor (The Driver) and Wilson (The Mechanic) discover a young woman in their back seat (Laurie Bird, credited as (The Girl). The newly formed trio continues to head east, and places a risky bet with Warren Oates after bumping into each other at a gas station. The first automobile to arrive in Washington D.C. is the winner. The prize: the loser's car (Taylor and Wilson drive a 1955 Chevy, while Oates pilots a 1970 Pontiac GTO). Strangely enough, rather than turning into a relentless fight to the finish, none of the participants seem too worried about picking up the pace. In fact, they act as if they're afraid of reaching their destinations, spurning an endless series of sidetracks that turns Hellman's film into a broad existential metaphor and cementing its place as one of 1970s Hollywood's bravest motion pictures.

Editorial reviews

"...What the movie has is a feel for the road and out-of-the-way restaurants and gas stations matched by few others..."
USA Today - Mike Clark (10/15/1999)

4 stars out of 5 -- "As a study in obsession and emotional dislocation TWO-LANE BLACKTOP is in a class of its own."
Total Film - Philip Kemp (07/01/2007)

"Mr. Hellman films the flat, empty landscapes with his eyes on the horizon line, as if he were John Ford following a wagon train on its way west."
New York Times - Dave Kehr (12/18/2007)

"Hellman and screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer keep it as stripped down as almost anything in contemporary European art cinema -- it's both abstract and concrete."
Sight and Sound - Tom Charity (03/01/2008)

2 Lane Blacktop

Two Lane Blacktop is a great movie..., if you're a CARGUY. It has very little dialogue, so when they say something, it's important to the plot of the movie. If you're looking for a movie that has heavy drama and a strong plot, this isn't the movie for you. But, if you're looking for a real life look at what street drag racing looked like in the early 70's, this might be for you. James Taylor does absolutely no singing and Dennis Wilson does absolutely no drumming in this movie. There are no nude scenes and very little sexual inuendo. One or two instances of foul language can be heard. There are many instances of technical engine talk between Taylor and Wilson. If you know a little about Big Block Chevrolet engines, you'll love the talk. Very strong car/racing/gambling movie, very weak drama/plot/dialogue movie. I enjoyed it immensley.

Special edition has everything any 2-lane fan could want. If you love 55 Chevys, James Taylor, movies about the trip, not the destination, movies about being alone, drag racing, just want to watch Dennis Wilson & JT in their only attempt at acting, or Warren Oates' best performance, buy this dvd! Did I mention this is my favorite movie? 5+ stars!!!

Great Car movie, though not as good as expected.

Created: 03/02/08
Great car movie, has several great cars from the past and has many great phrases throughout. I enjoyed this movie a great deal, though I believe it was over hyped before I viewed it so I was expecting a bit more. If you like Dirty Mary Crazy Larry and Vanishing Point (the original), then I feel you will like this one as well. I am glad I finally added this to my car movie collection. Two-Lane Blacktop is on HOT ROD magazines "Top 40 Car Movies on DVD" list, and rightfully so. Is it worth the $35.00 it seems to sell for? Probably not.

Likes: Awesome Cars, memorable lines.
Dislikes: not much of a plot, pricey.

Perhaps the greatest road film of all time next to "Vanishing Point"!

 | Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Without a doubt, one of the greatest road movies of all time and probably director Monte Hellman's most epic film! The film's gritty and very realistic portrayal of the Hot Rod subculture of the late 60's is nothing short of remarkable! The film is literally a window to the past. Everything from the characters, to the desolate road ways, the wayward locations along with the hippie subcultures are portrayed in a style that is more documentary then film. The film's genius is in it's shear simplicity...two go-for-broke vagabonds, a free spirited hippie girl and a egotistical tough guy in his 40's unwilling to let the younger generation or anybody else for that matter show him up, make's for the perfect 4 person cast! Gear heads and car lovers will be amazed at the rare vintage N.H.R.A. drag racing that was filmed in real time with the movie. This DVD may command a higher then usual price but it's well worth every cent! A true American cult classic!

Brings back memories

Great movie for the die hard car fanatic, but may seem a bit boring and sophmoric to others. The acting appears slow and forced but the race scenes make up for that aspect. All in all, a good, classic automobile related cult film!
