Ultraviolet (Blu-ray Disc, 2006, Rated Theatrical Edition)

Kurt Wimmer, Milla Jovovich|Theatrical release: 2006 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Although the artwork in the opening credits would lead you to believe otherwise, writer/director Kurt Wimmer (EQUILIBRIUM) reportedly based ULTRAVIOLET not on a comic book but on John Cassavetes's 1980 film GLORIA, in which a woman must protect a young boy who is carrying some information sought by the Mafia. In ULTRAVIOLET's mid-21st century, a virus has turned part of the earth's population into "hemophages," vampire-like creatures with heightened speed and dexterity, and a fascist government is intent on stamping them out. Enter Violet (Milla Jovovich), a hemophage determined to fight for her people. Her battle takes an unexpected turn, however, when she finds herself protecting Six (Cameron Bright), a mysterious young child who was raised in a lab.Tailor-made for young action fans raised on anime and videogames who want nothing more than to see a beautiful heroine leave a path of destruction behind her, ULTRAVIOLET cross-pollinates plot threads from popular franchises like THE MATRIX and UNDERWORLD. Creating a brightly hued, soft-focus environment constructed entirely with CGI and a green screen, ULTRAVIOLET's look is much like SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW (2004). Cementing the reputation she established with similar athletic, minimally clothed roles in THE FIFTH ELEMENT and the RESIDENT EVIL films, Jovovich will go down in the books as a sci-fi femme fatale for the ages. Her Ultraviolet--who inexplicably changes her hair color and outfits seemingly at will--is a lethal melding of Morticia Adams at a rave and KILL BILL's Bride. Pulling off moves that clearly demonstrate the training she underwent for the role, and usually with a bare midriff, she gives her fans plenty to enjoy. Wimmer wisely leaves the door open for further adventures in the saga.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"[T]he colors are almost always incredibly vivid in saturation, often with spot colors of violet, but many scenes are awash in other hues that enhance the fantasy setting and locations."

This is not a good movie. What it really is is an excuse for
Mila to jump around in color-changing, skin tight outfits for
87 minutes (in high definition, no less!)

The visual quality of the Blu-Ray version is good, with one caveat:
In some scenes, they used some sort of digital filtering to
make the characters' faces look very...featureless. I'm guessing
it was done to make it look more like a comic book, but whatever
it is, it makes them appear unfocused and even a little blurry.
Check out the scene with V and Six on the subway car to see what
I'm talking about. I will say that the vivid colors used throughout
the movie are nothing short of spectacular. Also of note: this is
presented in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, so it takes up almost the
entire 16:9 screen, which is nice.

The audio sounds just like the DVD to me, which is fine. Nobody
bought this movie for the sound effects. Eye candy. That's what
it is. And it's yummy.

Ultraviolet - Blu-ray

This film is another Comic made into a movie, and it stays true to the comic in that its continual action. With an uncomplicated plot that won't win any Oscars, this film concentrates on style and action. Both of which it excels in so well. Violets outfits and hair change color to her moods and surroundings, and looks so cool, as do the locations. But the action is simply breath taking, the fight scenes beautifully choreographed, and reminiscent of the first Matrix film. But the best part for action junkies is that its none stop throughout the movie. Rarely 10 minutes will pass without another fight scene, a mixture of martial arts, blades and guns that both mesmerizes and delights. Its like watching a trailer, were all the brilliant action scenes are blended into one continuous high octane five minutes that grabs and thrills you. Only this five minutes lasts the entire movie.

Ultraviolet: Technicolor Eye-Candy

Created: 24/08/06
If stunning visual effects put the lead in your pencil, then you will love Ultraviolet...for the first 20 minutes. Ultraviolet is a video game disguised as a feature film. Packed with silly dialogue, and (yawn) boring when no-one is fighting or chasing each other up the sides of buildings. The "blood wars" thing would've worked just fine without anyone actually becoming vampires - they could have just keep it viral (like '28 Days Later' did) and it would have made much more sense. Even the gratutious violence couldn't salvage this one for me. Great FX, predictable cliche-ridden storyline. Watch it with the volume down and a Nine Inch Nails CD on 10.

However, if you are even mildly infatuated with Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil, The Fifth Element) then buy it, buy it, BUY IT!

I'm gonna go take a cold shower now...

A great blu-ray! Milla is a hilarious commentator!

Created: 03/04/09
For a movie I didn't like all that much in the theater, the blu-ray release of Ultraviolet is fantastic.
The quality makes this vivid movie jump off of my home theater system, and I actually enjoy it more that when it was on the big screen.

The commentary by Milla Jovavich is one the best I've heard. Instead of boring talk by the lighting director about how hard a certain shot was, or dry talk from a writer about the depth of the character not being fully realized... watching with the commentary on is tremendous fun. Milla is seeing the movie with all of the special effects put in right along side you, and it's like she's sitting there on your couch kabitzing about the movie. She has small funny stories about that day shooting and all kinds of insight you normally don't get from the commentary.

As a blu-ray release, I give this a "definitely get" for your collection.

Ultraviolet on Blu Ray

Created: 16/04/08
Ok, this may not be the best film ever, but it's definately a good addition to the Blu Ray library. Story and plot are pretty good at best, and the acting decent but a little cheesy at times. But you need to take into account that this is like a comic book. After thinking like that, it's a lot more fun to watch! The visuals on Blu Ray are phenomenal! Bright colors, strong contrasts on whites and blacks and stunning clarity make this a must for Blu Ray owners!
