Audio Adrenaline's fifth studio release, UNDERDOG, manages to achieve this delicate balance, with God-loving lyrics that never sound pedantic and hook-laden instrumental work on par with the best pop-rock acts. The up-tempo synth-rock of the poppy opener, "Mighty Good Leader," proves the band to be more Jesus than Jones. One almost doesn't recognize Pete Townshend's classic "Let My Love Open the Door" until the band reaches the chorus, but the Hootie-meets-Cowboy Mouth arrangement proves to be a winning tribute. The Latin-flavored trumpet and acoustic guitar of "Jesus Movement" favorably bring to mind Sugar Ray and Cake. Audio Adrenaline switches musical gears even more drastically to do its best Stray Cats impression in "DC-10." A Beatles-influenced production style echoes in "This Day," which features a memorable chorus that's hard to shake. Deep feelings of faith are at the very heart of UNDERDOG, and the fitting title song metaphorically describes the underdog status of outspoken Christian beliefs in a secular society. While an obvious spiritual thread connects UNDERDOG, the album also proves Audio Adrenaline's ability to shuffle through a range of genres and influences like musical chameleons.

    probably their best

This cd solidifies the contribution of AudioA to CCM. There is some classic stuff here. This is solid pop/rock that obviously has a variety of influences. Here they have found their selves, being happy with who they are and being comfortable with the type of band that they are called to be.
Most of the songwriting is good, with less cheese than in some previous releases. The lyrics are positive and encouraging, biblically based and poised for teen consumption.
The theological idea of considering Jesus as a leader is an interesting concept on the first song, Mighty Good Leader. We should appreciate His gifting in this way and strive to emulate it.
Underdog is a celebration of ensured victory for the Christian. It is a source of encouragment when facing difficulties. Get Down is another such song, complete with actions in concert.
Good Life is simply a celebration of life itself, the gift that it is and how it should be enjoyed as such. This Day also makes for such a song, a mellow kick in the pants for getting up in the morning.
Their ELO cover is good and their remake of the classic hymn is ok. DC-10 simply doesn't fit on this cd but it is a likeable blues tune, even if cheesy lyrically. Houseplant takes a mocking poke at the unbiblical criticism of Christian artists and displays the band's sense of humour.
This is their best, so enjoy. Perfect for young teenagers.
    RIP

    LET THIS STAND ALONE

I am a Christian and loved rockin' music before I was "called". I thought that I was going to have to leave the rockin' side to follow my faith. Then I was given a CD by Big Tent Revival and I knew that I might not have to give that up totally. Next I found bands like Earthsuit and I thought that was even pretty cool. I had heard the song Big House and thought it was a little lame but not too bad either so I started checking out Audio A. I found a band that progressed to the point of Bloom that was pretty good. Then they released UNDERDOG. Finally I had the GEM. This became the disc that I would whip out on my non-Christian friends (many digging Creed at that time). UNDERDOG changed many peoples mind on the lameness of Christian music. It is still their masterpiece as they had reached their zenith and started the downward spiral after that to the point that they were a mere shadow of themselves, but that happens to most all bands. I most recently gave all my Audio A away to a guy in the Czech Rep. but I missed this on.

I love this band and had this cd a few years ago but it was lost during a cross-country road trip. I decided to purchase it to replace the one my sister lost and she and I are both very happy with it. Great CD
