Unofficial Guide Gives Honest Look at the Mouse House

    Created: 01/09/06
For travelers who want more than the official line from the Disney Company comes Bob Sehlinger's amazing tour book, "The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World."

Don't get me wrong: The official guide put out by Disney has lots of pictures and plenty of information...but it's really more of a pictorial and NOT a guide book. Sehlinger isn't shy at offering opinions, and more times than not is correct in his assessment.

There are multitudes of reasons for you to purchase this book (the 2007 version is available on eBay as of this review's writing):

    * IT'S HONEST. If a show stinks, he'll say it. If it's great, he will too. Sehlinger's extensive surveying not only gives ratings to all the rides and shows, but breaks it down into age groups (Pre-school, Grade School, Teens, Young Adults, Over 30, and Senior Citizen).

    * IT'S EXTENSIVE. Most tour books give descriptions and when best to try out. The Unofficial Guide tells these things but rates them all, gives warnings about motion sickness or flashing lights for those with epilepsy. He talks about how long the ride runs (and how long it will take you to get to the front of the line).

    * IT'S GOT A SENSE OF HUMOR. You will ENJOY reading this book; it's very tongue-in-cheek.

    * IT'S GOT A TOURING PLAN THAT ACTUALLY WORKS. Before we became "veterans" of Walt Disney World, we used this book's plan extensively. If you follow the Guide, it truly will help you to see more shows, ride more rides, and beat the crowd flow. For people who go to Walt Disney World when it's not so crowded, it's helpful. For people going in the Summer or during holidays, it is CRUCIAL.

    * FOR NEWBIES, IT LEADS YOU THROUGH THE PROCESS. From the initial planning of your trip all the way through to the actual event, you are given practical and wise steps to make the most of your trip. There's sections on saving money, selecting the right lodging, restaurants and more. There are also chapters that talk about Disney's Cruiseline, doing Disney with Kids, Special Needs situations, and more. It even has a section to review "the competition" in Orlando (very helpful if you want to sneak "off property" to hit Universal Studios).

Even though we're now on our 18th trip, we purchase Sehlinger's Unofficial Guide every year or two, just as a reference. The only negative I can see from this guidebook is that doesn't have pictures (due to the Disney Company's tight control over pictures of WDW being used by competiting tourbooks). But there are maps a'plenty and enough information to make you a savvy Mouse House vacationer. You want pictures? Call WDW and get their DVD Travel Planner. You want excellent information about how to make the MOST of your vacation? BUY THIS BOOK!

    Don't Leave Home Without It!

    Created: 12/02/07
If you're planning a Disney trip, the Unofficial Guide is a must-have.

Walt Disney World is no longer just the fun theme park it was when it opened in 1971. Covering over 40 square miles, WDW contains four theme parks, numerous hotels, shopping areas, water parks, a sports complex, and even a race track. How does a visitor, especially a first-timer, plan a vacation at such a varied and massive resort? The best answer, I've found, is The Unofficial Guide.

We've taken over 15 trips to Walt Disney World over the past 17 years, and almost every one of them was planned with the help of this guide. Everything is described in greatest detail -- hotels (even down to the best room number to request), restaurants, shops, attractions -- with ratings given by other visitors. And since this is the "unofficial" guide, you know you're not getting a Disney-approved sales pitch. It's all here -- the good and the bad.

Get tips on the best time of year to go, the weather, crowd levels at the parks, what attractions are too scary for the little ones, what time of day to visit certain attractions, how to use the fast-pass system, and much more. For those who don't want to think or plan, detailed touring plans are included that will help you get the most out of every day.

The Unofficial Guide also keeps an updated website with the latest crowd predictions, touring plans and other great information.

I highly recommending using The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World to help plan your magical vacation!

Don't go to DisneyWorld/ Orlando without THIS book!

    Created: 08/02/07
We bought this same guide 4 years ago right before going to Disneyworld with our son so we knew what to expect. It was SOOOOOOOOOO incredibly helpful that we ordered this one because we're going back later on this year. We love the way it tells you tips/tricks about getting the best character breakfasts, where to hang out to see characters, when to ride certain rides for shorter wait times, which parks to take your kids to in the morning versus afternoon, which rides are too scary for preschoolers, height requirements, ways to save money, etc. It's great for families and even couples going to DW. It even has information about Universal Studios and Islands of Fun as well as information on hotels, rental cars, etc-- everything you need for a vacation to Orlando. I cannot say enough about this book! It is well worth the money!

    Well Worth It!!

    Created: 08/04/07
This book was recommended to me by a friend who has been to Disney world twice. He said that he intends to buy the newest version of this book next time he goes back because it was so valuable to them the last two times they went. He is on a tight budget because they are a one income family, and he said it really helped them alot! It gives you great info (weather you are on a budget or not) that you just cant get anywhere else. I have not been to Disney World yet, but we are going soon. I got my book recently and we are using it to figure out what type of tickets to buy, what hotel to use, what month to go, what parks to visit, what restaurants to eat at, and even what time of day the lines are best at the different rides!!

This book had a lot of great tips that we used during our recent visit. It also had info on Universal Studios, which we ended up going to. Lots of great info on hotels, restaurants and when to tour the park. Also had links to great websites like mousesavers.com. Well worth the money before you go to the park.
