Product description

Synopsis
Carl Webster, the star of Elmore Leonard's THE HOT KID, returns, this time doggedly pursuing a pair of escaped German POWs who have holed up in Detroit under the protection of a German butcher. Complicating matters are two women: a Nazi spy, Vera Mezwa, and Webster's ex-wife, the incorrigible and irresistible Honey Deal. As with all Leonard's work, the characters are vivid and pungent, the dialogue blows the dust off your brain, and the plot is as smooth as molasses. Tough, sharp, and cool in all the best ways--UP IN HONEY'S ROOM is a book to be read with enormous pleasure.

Publisher's Note

The odd thing about Walter Schoen, German born but now running a butcher shop in Detroit, he's a dead ringer for Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS and the Gestapo. They even share the same birthday.

Honey Deal, Walter's American wife, doesn't know that Walter is a member of a spy ring that sends U.S. war production data to Germany and gives shelter to escaped German prisoners of war. But she's tired of telling him jokes he doesn't understand—it's time to get a divorce.

Along comes Carl Webster, the hot kid of the Marshals Service. He's looking for Jurgen Schrenk, a former Afrika Korps officer who escaped from a POW camp in Oklahoma. Carl's pretty sure Walter's involved with keeping Schrenk hidden, so Carl gets to know Honey, hoping she'll take him to Walter. Carl then meets Vera Mezwa, the nifty Ukrainian head of the spy ring who's better looking than Mata Hari, and her tricky lover Bohdan with the Buster Brown haircut and a sly way of killing.

Honey's a free spirit; she likes the hot kid marshal and doesn't much care that he's married. But all Carl wants is to get Jurgen Schrenk without getting shot. And then there's Otto—the Waffen-SS major who runs away with a nice Jewish girl. It's Elmore Leonard's world—gritty, funny, and full of surprises.

Secretly passing intelligence through a spy ring while running a butcher shop in Detroit, German-born Walter Schoen becomes estranged from his long-suffering wife and is targeted by Marshals serviceman Carl Webster, who believes Schoen is hiding an escaped prisoner of war. 200,000 first printing.

Industry Reviews
"It's as if the best of Mel Brooks and Quentin Tarantino were refined into something finer and purer....If there is a little more slapstick and a little less crime here than usual, it hardly matters. The talk's the thing, and Leonard hooks you with his first quotation mark." (starred review)

Up in Honey's Room by Elmore Leonard (2007)

Set in the last months of the second world war, Leonard's 43rd novel has U.S. marshal Carl Webster, the hot kid from 2005's The Hot Kid, a little older, close to forty, married and on the trail of German POWs escaped from a detention camp in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. The pair of natzis end up in Detroit where they are hidden by a German born butcher, with whose ex-wife, Honey Deal, Carl soon finds him self faling for.
Leonard doesn't write series novels, but every now and then, he brings back a favorite character. Carl,is the son of Virgil Webster, the Spanish-American war hero of CUBA LIBRE.
As with many of Leonard's books, situation and character rule plot. The story becomes quite complex as the characters double cross one another.
Leonard's crisp dialogue and wonderfuly alive characters are as sharp as any. This cast mix suspense, surprise and comedy as they are drawn together for a final shootout.
In short I think readers should welcome another fine tale with Leonard's characters caught in traga-comic situations all too human.

Up In Honey's Room HARDBACK BOOK

Created: 23/01/08
It's Detroit during late WWII and there is a federal pursuit of two escaped German prisoners of war. The story drops you right into an oddball bunch of pro-Nazis, some German and some American. Deputy US Marshal Carl Webster returns as the quiet hero. You have a sexy woman who is also funny but slightly dangerous and plenty of quirky characters.

There are a couple of unbelievable conversations in the book. Then there is the transvestite that barely gets noticed among the Nazis. Also Honey's husband, the Detroit, German born butcher is a dead ringer for Heinrich Himmler. Leonard fans will love it goofiness and all.
