Movie synopsis

Acclaimed director Bryan Singer moves away from the worlds of Marvel and DC to helm this World War II thriller. Tom Cruise stars as Claus von Stauffenberg, a man intent on killing Adolf Hitler. Singer's talented cast also includes Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Eddie Izzard, and Terrence Stamp., Based on a the true story of cadre of Nazi officers who grew to oppose Hitler's murderous pursuits and made several attempts to kill him in the late stages of WWII, VALKYRIE features a top-flight cast, with drama and suspense in equal measure. The film is a stylistic departure for director Bryan Singer (X-MEN, X2) and star Tom Cruise, with a screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) and Nathan Alexander that is constructed like a heist film, with a team of like-minded men coming together for a common purpose and facing incredible odds. It is 1943, and though he has come to be disgusted by Hitler's campaign of evil, Count Claus von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise) has risen to the level of lieutenant colonel in the German army. Convinced that Hitler must die, Von Stauffenberg requests a transfer to Tunisia, where he loses his left eye and right hand during an Allied air raid. Falling in with a group of similarly disillusioned officers including Major General Henning von Tresckow (Kenneth Branagh), General Friedrich Olbricht (Bill Nighy), General Friedrich Fromm (Tom Wilkinson), and Colonel General Ludwig Beck (Terence Stamp), Stauffenberg is at the center of several attempts on Der Fuhrer's life, culminating in a bombing that kills a handful of his officers and leaves Hitler only slightly injured.Though advance photos of Cruise in Nazi uniform brought VALKYRIE negative publicity, his restrained performance is at the heart of this well-crafted, thinking person's action movie. He is bolstered by an incredible British cast including Branagh, Stamp, and Wilkinson, and by the film's dazzling art direction. Though it's a story to which viewers should already know the ending, Singer still creates ample suspense. The result is a taut and effective historical thriller.

Valkyrie - Remembering the Past

Created: 20/05/09
Tom Cruise (Top Gun, Mission Impossible) stars as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, a decorated war hero of the Third Reich who is convinced the only way to save Germany and her people is to remove Hitler from power.

The Movies all-star cast includes: Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Carice van Houten, Eddie Izzard, Terence Stamp & Tom Wilkinson.

The movie tells the true story of how high ranking Officers used Valkyrie to attempt to change the German government after the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler July 20, 1944.

The movie is fast paced and full of action, the story is mostly accurate with some liberties taken to enhance the drama but overall it sticks to the facts.

I recommend this to anyone who needs a refresher course on the history of WWII.

Rated 5 of 5 for an excellent story and fine acting.

This Power Grab Never Felt So Tense Yet So COOL!

Created: 12/07/09
Based on an assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler which actually happened on July 20th, 1994, this film engulfs the viewer with action, wonderful scenery, and a believable storyline and character-base to boot.

Before long, we discover that that Colonel Claus Von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise) becomes the number one man to be responsible for taking Hitler out of power by plotting an assassination with many other Germans (Officers, Lower ranking Soldiers, and other Politicals) wishing to regain power from the hands of the Feurher.

The tippie-toeing that went on in this film really makes you feel the nervous tension as lies and deceit become second nature. After a botched plan perpetrated earlier, Von Stauffenburg is called into the plans and given a very close position in Hitler's Army.

Project VALKYRIE becomes the main way for the Emergency Army to maintain and keep control if something were to happen to Hitler, thus the SS would be taken out of the formula, thus staging a very slick Coo.

The bombing attempt on Hitler failed, thus foiling the plotters plans of quickly taking power by any means necessary, but soon lose power as their plans backfire on them. Cruise plays a convincing Von Stauffenberg. Additional cast members are Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, and Terence Stamp.

This incredible story unravels with excellent harmony and wonderful cinematography. This is based on historic fact and moves very quickly. We seldom feel that anyone really wanted to punish those who took part in the coo, however, that's what happens in Love and War. Nearly 5,000 Germans were soon arrested and executed after this occurrence.

I'll give this a 5/5 for excellent portrayal of true story.

Bombs Away~ Plot to KILL HITLER~ GREAT cast~ well done

Created: 23/05/09
PLOT: a group of German Officers and Civilians decided they will kill HITLER at any cost~ BASED on HISTORIC EVENTS FROM JULY 20TH 1944 WITH A STELLER CAST and fantasic cinematography~

A group of Germans both civilians and German Officers decide they have to KILL Hitler and arrest most of his loyal followers in one bold move~ The movie starts with Count Von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise) who is badly injured in North Africa. He becomes is pulled into the group of plotters who decide HITLER has to be removed from POWER dead or alive. WE see how careful they find a group of both German Officers and Civilians who come up with a detailed plot of how to get rid of HITLER but after several failed attempts Stauffenburg is moved into a trusted position to HAVE DIRECT ACCESS TO HITLER and in his lap falls VAlKYRIE : the plans for the HOME ARMY to maintain and take over authority in the event of a national crisis~ ah~ now they have a WAY to get close to KILL Hitler and PLAN to take over the government after it is done~ Part one~ KILL HITLER Part two: START OPERATION VALYRIE~ NOW "ALTERED TO HELP THE PLOTTERS"~ use the HOME ARMY to arrest the SS (HITLERS private army and bodyguards mostly) and then take over all Authority~ and allow the PLOTTERS to qickly take over and then plan a "PEACE" with the Allies. Stauffenberg (Cruise) has a bomb in his briefcase and is in a meeting in Hitler's ULTRA SECRET "WOLF'S LAIR" IN East Prussia when the Bomb explodes~ now Stauffenberg flies to Berlin and the rest of the plotters are moving forward with the HOME GUARDs take over and arrests of the SS. BUT THE BOMB DID NOT KILL HITLER~ so now we see the plotters quickly taking power by all means but loose it as quickly when their PLOT fails. Cruise is very good as Stauffenberg backed up by Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy and Tom Wilkinson, and Terence Stamp. the CINEMATOGRAPHY IS EXELLENT. based on historic fact~ this moves along very nicely and keeps us glued to the Plot of couragous Germans who tried to kill a tyrant. I give it a solid 9 out of 10 for wonderful plot, very steller cast and great costumes and many scenes were shot on the actual spot where they happened. in reality over 5,000 germans were arrested and executed in Hitlers revenge against the NEARLY successful plot.

Valkyrie

Created: 27/08/09
Based on a true story, Tom Cruise plays Nazi Col. Claus Von Stauffenberg,
who is wounded in North Africa during the campaign there. He returns, a
hero, to his native Germany and joins he Resistance due his discontent.
In a daring plan to create a shadow government and assassinate Adolf
Hitler, events unfold so that he becomes a key player and he finds himself
tasked with both leading the coup and personally attempting to blow up
the Fuhrer. When his supporting generals fail to carry out their part of
the plan on time- trouble ensues for Von Stauffenberg. He continues his
plan though, knowing he is dead if they fail. A very good flix, but history
students will know the ending-since it is based on fact. Still alot of action,
suspense and drama as the assination attempt is tried. If you like history,
WWII action or drama you will certainly enjoy this one.

Valkyrie, Highly Disappointing!

Created: 13/07/09
It sure seems lately like any film that Tom Cruise decides to act in seems to turn to gold no matter what substance the film turns out to be.

I wanted to see this movie because of all the hype and it was about a semi-controversal subject. I was highly disappointed in this movie. There was not much action, drama, or anything for that matter. Accept for a few tense scenes, the movie almost put me asleep. I thing this was one of the worst movies Tom Cruise has done.

It is basically about a group of Nazi's that are attempting to remove Hitler from power and change the pace of the war. The character Tom Cruise plays is a highly confident war hero who attempts to overthrow Hitler's regime. Well, we all know how it ends!

I was disappointed that they made this movie to honor the group of men attempting to get Hitler out of power. They did not do any justice to that group. This movie was quite boring and needed more spice!

Not recommended.
