Valley Girl (DVD, 2009, Special Edition)

Martha Coolidge, Nicolas Cage, Deborah Foreman|Theatrical release: 1983 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

It's a "totally tubular" scene as a "grody-to-the-max" punk from the wrong side of the Hollywood Hills, Randy (Nicolas Cage), falls for Julie (Deborah Foreman), a mall-dwelling Valley Girl, in this time capsule of 1980s teen vernacular. Julie and Randy become passionately involved; yet, despite her feelings for Randy, Julie succumbs to the peer pressure of her mall-obsessed friends, and gets back together with her Valley dude boyfriend, Tommy (Michael Bowen), who whisks Julie off to the Senior prom. Randy doesn't give up so easily, however, and chases Julie to the prom, with the help of his faithful friend, Fred (Cameron Dye), in an attempt to wrest her back. The sound track features the music of Men at Work, the Clash, and Josie Cotton in this 1980s teen comedy--an era, and topic, that director Coolidge was fond of chronicling, like her contemporary, John Hughes.

Editorial reviews

"...VALLEY GIRL is very good simply because director Martha Coolidge obviously cares about her two lead characters and is privileged to have a couple of fine performers..."

True 80's "Modern English" spin on love & rock & roll!

THE BEST 80's FLICK EVER!! I loved it from beginning to end when it first came out, when NO ONE had heard of Nick Cage, or knew his real name (as in Francis Ford Coppola's nephew!)but I knew then that no red-blooded American chick would ever have to hear him say again "Like com bak suun!" He epitomizes all your mother wanted you to hate & all you could ever want with the romanticism of Carey Grant! I mean, let's face it ladies, who wouoldn't want to see a love-struck "hunk" camping outside our bedroom! The soundtrack is FAB as well & if you'll notice, lots of songs in the past 20 years have included parts of these great tunes, or been influenced and shaped by some of these intensely punk grooves. And let's face it, don't we all just want to find that one person that will "stop the world & melt with you(us)?" It doesn't matter if you know this film, as I do, word by word, from beginning to end, it will never get old because we all need to remember to "grow into our own person, you know!" And we need to continually grow up into functioning adults, while not ever losing our youth, like Julie's parents, lest we become square or "sooo borin!"

A True Symbol Of The 80's

Introducing Niclas Cage! I remember seeing this movie on the big screen back in 1983. And It's just one of those feel good movies that you just can't put down! Teens doing what they do best. Hanging out at the mall, going to the beach, having parties. Or just hanging with your friends. And best of all! Searching for your true love!! The movie is great and the music is awesome!! from Modern English,Eddie Grant,The Plimsouls,Payola,The Flirts! And many more. A movie you will watch over & over again!

Valley Girl is an 1980's classic. It is cute, funny, and sweet all at the same time. A real love story set in a realistic high school dating scene. Not intended for the younger audience. One of my favorite movies!

Great hip love story! Nicholas Gage young and gets you with those eyes. Deborah Foreman you can't help but smile when she smiles. What a great combination even though he was dating Elizabeth Daily (Loryn) who is also in the movie. Worth watching again and again.
