Album Notes
Van Halen: David Lee Roth (vocals); Eddie Van Halen (guitar, background vocals); Michael Anthony (bass, background vocals); Alex Van Halen (drums, background vocals).
Recorded at Sunset Sound Recorders, Hollywood, California in 1978.
In 1978, Pasadena's Van Halen released its debut album and shook the rock world to its foundations. VAN HALEN, featuring the fiery fretwork of Eddie Van Halen, and the talented howling of David Lee Roth, gave a kick-start to the moribund heavy rock genre. As Kiss turned disco and Black Sabbath sank in a morass of drugs and alcohol, Van Halen adopted a blues base, added a metal sheen, and created a sound that remains influential today.
Michael Anthony's thumping bass line, followed by Alex Van Halen's hi-hat and Eddie Van Halen's first chord, heralds "Runnin' With the Devil," Roth's tale of excess. "Eruption" follows, the guitar solo here a breakthrough in speed and creativity. In addition Van Halen takes the Kinks' classic "You Really Got Me" to new heights on its metal version. The melodic structure remains intact, while the band adds crunch and Diamond Dave's sexy patter. Including the catchy "Jamie's Cryin'" and bluesy "Ice Cream Man", there is absolutely no filler on VAN HALEN, one of the finest rookie efforts by a musical act.

Editorial Reviews
Included in Q's Best Metal Albums Of All Time - ...Eddie Van Halen reinvented rock guitar on his band's debut....America's favorite party band....this dazzling debut remains their trump card.
Q (08/01/2000)

5 stars out of 5 - Eddie crammed a whole season of soap-opera plot twists into every solo, making liberal use of the whammy bar but never losing the melody.
Rolling Stone

Van Halen combined a dazzling live show with a party-hearty motto...

Quite simply put, no-one had seen or heard anything like it. Roth's flamboyant showmanship, with the microphone dangling provocatively between his legs on the cover, and Eddie Van Halen's monstrously inventive guitar playing became a textbook for air guitarists the world over. From the instrumental blow-out of "Eruption," the gritty teen pop of "Feel Your Love Tonight," to the strutting riff around which "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" was built and the grandiose reworking of The Kinks' "You Really Got Me," Van Halen set their own absurd standards. One of the truly great rock and roll/metal debut albums.

Any review for this album has to be A+, unless your an Oingo Boingo fan giving one of those "long haired bands" a try.

Roth's voice is spot on. Eddie hit us with riffs and fill in's that every guiarist wants to play but will never nail the same "feel" Eddie translates into his playing.Mike and Alex fill out the band, Alex being a better musician. Alex plays clean and they mix his crash symbols and bass pretty good, so you can hear the punch.

The entire album kicks ass,any fan will tell you there isn't a song on here you would skip over. Each one has it's own style and energy that you get into and no song sounds alike. "Eruption" than "You Really Got Me" builds a steady energy level then switch gears with "Ain't Talkin Bout Love", be it, keeping a great presence of who they are and the sound they were hitting us with.

This is also, in my opinion, one of the best B sides albums."Atomic Punk" and "On Fire", totally kick ass. Best songs they ever wrote. Very hard and songs that just blaze with guitar magnificence "Feel Your Love Tonight" doesn't rip it like the latter, but it has it's own style that you really have to listen to. Little nuances make the song, like Eddie using harmonics in his bridges, the harmonies and the gritty sound.

I really like how they mixed the album, especially the echo and the discrete processing. The stereo mix is really split with Eddie being isolated to the right, I believe, and the echo from effects on the other side. You really get great spacing to hear the guitar work, it's feels more personal, you can picture standing in front of him watching him play. If you turn the balance to one side, you will hear a faint mix of Eddie with the vocals and such, and to the other, a great opportunity to discretely appreciate how good he is.

This album is a classic! And, I'd even venture to say that if you didn't own it back in the late 70's or early 80's, claiming that you rocked was suspect at best. Van Halen's first offering in my opinion is just one of those albums that's as relevent today as it was when it came out in '78. I'll almost guarantee that you'll air guitar and drum from start to finish. Hell I've been doin' it since I was 10 and I'm now 43. 8) LONG LIVE ROCK & ROLL!
