    Movie synopsis

All varieties of otherworldly creatures come out to play in Stephen Sommers' gothic carnival. Frankenstein's monster, ferocious werewolves, vampire bat babies, a maniacal scientist named Igor, and a CGI Dr. Jekyll are just a few. When they come together, a thrilling fantasy adventure results, making VAN HELSING a visual feast. Destined to fight the world's evil, Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) is a warrior in a cowboy hat and a trench coat, heavily armed with a rapid-fire multi-arrow crossbow, among other gadgetry. A legion of monks in Rome send Van Helsing to Transylvania to hunt the immortal Count Dracula (Richard Roxburgh), who terrorizes the local people with the help of his three vampire brides. Especially threatened is the vixen Anna Valerious (Kate Beckinsale), whose family also strives to kill the Count. Van Helsing and Anna Valerious work together, searching for the secret door to Dracula's lair. But it is only after massive battles involving impossible stunts, races on horse-pulled carriages, and the desecration of enchanting medieval castles (all done with dizzying computer graphics) that they succeed. Not only does the eye candy keep on coming, the tongue-in-cheek writing and deep Transylvanian accents perfect the film with a dose of dark humor.

"[With a] gleeful, chaotic sense of visual excess."
    New York Times - A. O. Scott (05/07/2004)

"The best part is the moodily handsome look of the sets..."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (05/07/2004)

"The movie is like a Greatest Hits compilation; it's assembled like Frankenstein's Monster, from spare parts stitched together and brought to life with electricity, plus lots of computer-generated images."
    Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (05/07/2004)

"The dark, desaturated imagery perfectly complements this vampires and werewolves tale, with lots of cold bluish-gray exteriors and warm firelit interiors."

Fun to watch and the score is gorgeous

    Created: 29/10/08
I am a fan of the old hollywood favorites like Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Wolfman and this is a new spin on all of these great figures. The only reason I didn't give this an excellent mark is that it is mostly CGI effects and it can get a little old, with that said the actors did great in their parts. Hugh Jackman is a hero or a villian in the different views of the public. Working like a shadow for the catholic church he hunts down and destroys monsters that are a threat to society. He is great in this role, sexy and dark but with a sense of humor as well. He is joined by actors that are no less fun to watch. This is not a thinking movie, it is pure entertainment and it is just fun fun fun!!!! The score of this film is one to add to your collection of great music as well.

    Saturday Matinee

    Created: 28/01/09
Watching the combination of creatures featured in the movie, took me back to Saturday afternoon matinee watching my favorite monster. One of the positive things going for this movie is that it has all of the major Hollywood monsters. I enjoyed the sexual overtone between Gabriell and Anna. The only negative issue was that occasionally the movie just assumed that those of us watching knew all about the background and the relationship between the characters. My biggest wish would be for a "Van Helsing II" There are several monsters to be bested by our hero. He could always go to Thebes follow up on the work of the O'Connell s. Or over to Asia for a battle with fu Manchu If you do not know who these characters are it just proves my point for another movie. OH, there was very little of the gratuitous violence found in the horror films of today. By it, watch it, and share it. Remember,Transylvania folks have an unique way of looking at death. Let's go with round two.

Jackman and Beckinsale What Else Can You Say

    Created: 22/03/11
There are movies that have pretty people in them all the time, but not many of them can slay vampires and werewolves. This is one of my all time favorite movies. Great action throughout and a good story line. Not your traditional gore and fine for a family movie night. If you're looking for a gore, this isn't it, but its a good movie with believeable acting.

    Van Helsing (2008, DVD)

    Created: 04/11/08
I purchased this movie in the edited version. I prefer movies without the violence, language, sex, and nudity that often earns them a PG-13 or R rating. The plot of this movie however I must say was more than a little lame. It's one saving grace was the character of Carl, played by David Wenham. Without his excellent portrayal of the character's innocent charm and humor, this movie would not have been a near complete failure, it would have been a complete failure.
