Movie synopsis

Director Cameron Crowe (JERRY MAGUIRE, ALMOST FAMOUS) teams up with Tom Cruise once again in an adaptation of Alejandro Amenabar's 1997 Spanish film OPEN YOUR EYES. Cruise plays David Aames, a playboy publisher leading a seemingly charmed life. His most recent playmate is his "friend" Julie Gianni (Cameron Diaz), who cares for David more than he realizes. When David meets the fetching Sofia Serrano (Penélope Cruz) at his birthday party, he awakens to the possibility of what true love can feel like, leaving Julie distraught. However, after an accident that changes David's life, he is forced to rethink his choices. This psychological thriller becomes roller coaster ride of flashbacks as David tries to make sense of all that has happened, relaying some surreal experiences to a psychiatrist (Kurt Russell) after being charged with murder. The film's message may differ for each viewer, but it does make one bold point: every action has consequences.Crowe gets exceptional performances from Cruise, Cruz, and Diaz and the alluring pop soundtrack features songs from REM, Radiohead, Bob Dylan, and Peter Gabriel. Amazingly, the scene of Cruise running through a completely empty Times Square was shot on location, a major feat in and of itself.

Interesting, if Confusing...

Created: 24/03/08
Altho' I'm not especially a big fan, I thought Tom Cruise delivered a good performance as playboy wealthy publisher David Aames, whose experiences blur the line between fantasy & reality. Throughout the movie, David has vivid nightmares that he can't seem to reconcile & eventually breaks down. In the midst of all the chaos, David meets & falls in love with struggling artist Penelope Cruz after a brief dalliance with Cameron Diaz, who begins stalking him. Jason Lee plays his best friend & as David's life/dreamlife becomes increasingly intertwined, he doesn't know who to trust, nor does he know what is real/what isn't real. Kurt Russell plays a supporting role as his psychiatrist. I'd say that _Vanilla Sky_ is worth watching, but it is confusing & frustrating much of the time, altho' there is a payoff/resolution in the end.

Good to add to your collection. The songs by Bob Dylan and Peter Gabriel rock!

Strawberry. Chocolate, or Vanilla~I Pick Blueberry Sky!

Created: 08/10/06
Strawberry. chocolate, or vanilla~I pick blueberry sky. If you understand that statement, then you might understand this film as well. I felt it was truly a weird film, that is hard to follow, and does not have a very good storyline. Granted, this is a fictional film, but this was way too strange, too weird, and much to boring for me. I felt the whole plot was lacking, as it deals with the concept of death in such a bizarre fashion, and keeps bouncing back and forth between the virtual dreams of tom cruise after a fatal car crash with Cameron Diaz, a jilted lover who commits a murder suicide while behind the wheel of her car. Not one of my favorites, give it 2 stars, thumbs down.

Despite most people not really caring too much for this film, Vanilla Sky is actually one of my favorite movies. To me, it's just an amazing film. I just think everything works well together, from the cast, to the cinematography, to the music. Especially the music. Cameron Crowe has always been big on good movie soundtracks, and Vanilla Sky has a great soundtrack, if you're into more indie rock bands, from Radiohead which plays in the beginning of the film, to "Untitled 4" by Sigur Rós at the end of the movie. Just a great weird, twisted slighty confusing movie, get it!

Mind blower

It seems that Vanilla Sky is a love-it or hate-it film. I tend to believe that the "hate-it" sect doesn't really see the movie for what it is. To me, this movie is entirely about choices, and the consequences of those choices, and also about the true meaning of happiness. This is one of the most dense and intense movies I've ever seen. There's no way you'll know what's coming until you get there.
