A "Vanishing" breed?
Created: 26/10/06
I didn't see the French version, and won't because I hate written translations or dubbing that takes away from the viewing.
Having no point of reference, I can say the movie moves nicely without distracting the viewer's attention, and is a worthy thriller with goofy flaws that make it somewhat perfunctory.
The teaming of two stars whose fathers were also well known actors kind of keeps the breed going in Hollywood.
No need to go through the details as other reviews are highly revealing.
All in all, a very well done movie that will keep you in suspense throughout.
You won't trust strangers no matter how "normal" they may appear.
I would rate it excellent if not for two flaws I found in the ending.

Boy, do I hate a bad remake--

I don't know if my rating has been tainted by the fact that I saw the original French version of this movie many years ago, but after seeing this one, I was sorely disappointed. The mysterious manner and suspense of the first movie is gone, and perhaps it's the lead actors who ruin it for me. Sutherland himself comes off too creepy, and therefore the viewer doesn't have a whole lot of sympathy for him. Bridges is not quite right in the role; the criminal in the original production comes off as much more clever. Whatever it is, the movie doesn't quite work.
In this movie, a man (played by Kiefer Sutherland) becomes obsessed with his lover's abduction, and does everything in his power to find out what happens to her. When her abductor (played by Jeff Bridges) says he knows what happened and offers a re-enactment, the man obliges. Unfortunately, the re-enactment is much more than he bargained for.

Like Hitchcock? Check this out...

Loved this movie. Hitchcock is one of my favorites since you aren't quite sure what he'll do next. The Vanishing with Kiefer Sutherland is as good as you can get without being a Hitchcock classic. Mr. Sutherland gives a very heart wrenching performance as Jeff, all the emotions you'll experience on the corkscrew at Cedar Point! Love, fear, abject terror, the moment you realize you are no longer in control thus subsequently embracing totally the thing you dread most. It was refreshing to see Mr. Sutherland play a role that shows his vulnerable side, as a victim not the bad guy. Jeff Bridges is a total demented psychopath, very believeable in todays society. Hated the odd european accent Mr. Bridges endowed Barney with. The main reason I purchased this movie was because 24 isn't on currently due to the writers strike & I had to get my Kiefer fix. Jeff isn't Jack, but at the end the thing Jeff does with the shovel could be considered a tad bit Bauerish. Definately NOT a kids movie, yet it does teach an important lesson: NEVER buy discount jewelry from a guy with a bad accent, and NEVER get into a car with him either...
