At first, he doesn't believe the note writer intends to carry out the threatened crime. Then one of the women is murdered--and that's only the first salvo in an escalating psychotic campaign that forces Bill into a series of wrenching, no-win choices that threaten to destroy him and everything that he holds dear.

VELOCITY

Bill Wile is an easygoing, hardworking guy who leads a quiet, ordinary life. But that is about to change. One evening, after his usual eight-hour bartending shift, he finds a typewritten note under the windshield wiper of his car. If you don’t take this note to the police and get them involved, I will kill a lovely blond schoolteacher. If you do take this note to the police, I will instead kill an elderly woman active in charity work. You have four hours to decide. The choice is yours.

It seems like a sick joke, and Bill’s friend on the police force, Lanny Olson, thinks so too. His advice to Bill is to go home and forget about it. Besides, what could they do even if they took the note seriously? No crime has actually been committed. But less than twenty-four hours later, a young blond schoolteacher is found murdered, and it’s Bill’s fault: he didn’t convince the police
to get involved. Now he’s got another note, another deadline, another ultimatum…and two new lives hanging in the balance.

Suddenly Bill’s average, seemingly innocuous life takes on the dimensions and speed of an accelerating nightmare. Because the notes are coming faster, the deadlines growing tighter, and the killer becoming bolder and crueler with every communication–until Bill is isolated with the terrifying knowledge that he alone has the power of life and death over a psychopath’s innocent victims. Until the struggle between good and evil is intensely personal. Until the most chilling words of all are: The choice is yours.

A FAST review of VELOCITY

If I were comparing this with other Koontz books, I would give it a "4" — compared with everybody else it is definitely a "5." This novel shows just how good Dean Koontz has become since his mediocre SF novels of decades ago... he has taken one of the oldest plots in the world ("the biter bit") and turned it into a thrilling tour-de-force. I thought I was getting tired of all the "serial killer" novels coming out these days — actually I was — but it didn't matter; this one is at the top of my list. Incidentally, I got it from my public library... but if your library doesn't have it, I recommend buying it. Yes, I do sell books on the internet; no, I do not have this one for sale, nor do I expect to, unless some nice person gives me two free copies (in which case I will keep one of them on my own bookshelf). Now it's two years later and I just re-read my review. Guess what I am going to do now... (if you guessed go back and REREAD THIS BOOK you were right!) I expect to enjoy it a lot. And now it's a year or so later... and I did reread it and I did enjoy it a lot. Still recommended.

Suspenseful and creepy!

I read a lot of horror and thriller books so over time I guess I have become a little immune to the fear factor. I have to say, although Koontz is not my favorite writer - a little long winded sometimes - for the first time in years and years of bedtime reading, I actually got a little spooked about turning off my bedside lamp! I did manage to resist checking my closet for lurking axe murderers but only just.

With a likable hero and very creepy villain, the suspense remained right to the end. Very good read.

Without doubt Dean is my No 1 choice when looking for books, I just wish he could write a book a week, Then I wouldnt have to keep waiting for the next one to come out. Im not going to go into details about the book as if you are like me, I prefer to not know anything untill I start reading about it in the book, I have read every one of his books so far and I love them all.
So as you can probably guess from what I wrote above, I highly Recomend this book.

I think this book is the best I have read in a long time... Koontz writes with such excitement and detail you feel like you're watching a movie in your head... he does it better than KING... he does it better than any other writer tonight... it was thrilling if one can say that about a book... I would it again... and that's unlike me... murder heads in jars... this is an amazing writer... lock the doors send the kids away for the weekend... and indulge...
