    Movie synopsis

A group of P.O.W.s at a German prison camp agree to compete against Nazi soccer players in this World War II drama set in 1943 Occupied Europe. German Major Karl von Steiner, who played soccer professionally before the war, comes up with the idea. When his superior officers find out about the competition, they pit the Allies against Germany's best team--but they don't realize that the P.O.W.s plan to use the upcoming big game as a means of escaping. The Allied team includes John Colby, a British officer who also played soccer before the war, and Robert Hatch, an American soldier who cares far more about gaining his freedom than the game itself. When the P.O.W.s realize they have a good shot at beating the Nazi team in front of a huge crowd, they must decide what's more important: finishing the match or getting out alive.

the "goal" is a mass escape~ VERY good World War 2~

    Created: 20/04/10
PLOT:ALLIED PRISONERS ARE CHALLENGED TO A SOCCER GAME WITH THE NAZIS~ FOR PROPAGANDA purposes~ but the allies have a "goal" of their own~ an escape~

some of the BEST soccer players are in a POW camp and the German Commandant always excellent Max Von Sydow~challenges a Soccer Game between Allied prisoners VS Nazis for 'proganda purposes'~ Michael Caine as Colby a world class soccer champ is the coach of the allied team~ Pele is added (just so happens a Brazilian POW is there) LOL but Sylvester Stallone an american fighting for the Brits and ends up the goalie~~ this starts very slow~ but ends at a Paris Soccer stadium while the Paris Underground are digging a tunnel to escape~ but the excellent soccer game at the end of the movie keeps us glued to the end~ and a very good twist ending~ and we get to see Pele (he "planned the actual game") in excellent form~~
I GIVE IT 4 OUT OF 5 FOR JOHN HUSTON DIRECTION~ AND PELE WHO STEALS THE SHOW~ and for Stallone one of his early movies~

    Best Soccer Film ever!!

This is an oldie. but such a goodie. The premise is a World Wa Two POW camp, the good guys, Stallone, Caine, PELE and others use soccer to try and make their escape from some really hideous, nasty nazis. It will keep you on the edge of your seat! I've seen it a dozen times and it never fails to thrill. I had to have it in DVD. The soccer scenes with Pele are worth the price of admission. Don't miss this sleeper. it's GREAT!!!! Good for the kids, too.

1980 movie starring Slyvester Stallone, Michael Caine. The acting is wonderful, the storyline set in a WWII POW camp (soldiers treated half decent) where the prisoners are challenged to a soccer game against the Germans. It has a great plot with twists and an even better ending. Worth watching. Also suitable for family viewing.

This movie is a little outdated, but once you get past that it is a great movie! A must-see for soccer fans. It even held the attention of my 10 year old!
