Victory At Sea Complete Series
Created: 11/08/06
"Victory At Sea" is one of the best documentaries ever assembled, and, amazingly, it was produced over 50 years ago from actual battle film footage. I can't think of a musical score that better fits the visual images. Richard Rodgers genius comes through in every episode. Robert Russell Bennett conducted the orchestra and did an amazing job. The narration of Mr. Graves is synonomous with the series and an integral part of it.
It was outstanding in its time and is outstanding 50 years later. This is a must have item for all who are interested in WW II and so much of it is from the perspective of those directly involved with the war.

Epic in scope, 26 episodes from World War II
Created: 16/10/10
Remember World War Two? That's the one we won before military LEADERSHIP degenerated into mere management! This collection of three compact disc DVD's contains all twenty-six episodes of the multi-award winning TV series from the early fifties (the years before Elvis was drafted...)celebrating the immense heroism of our US Navy men and women from December, 1941 to September, 1945.
More than 13,000 hours of classic black & white film footage from both allied and enemy sources were reviewed and culled to depict the vast scope of the Pacific war on land and at sea set to the music of Richard Rodgers.
Three excellent DVDs. Watch closely and you can even get a little woozy from the waves.

When I saw this collection available, I snapped it up because I remembered something about these shows being on television following the war, and wanted to know more about the war. I was only seven years old when the war ended in 1945, so there was so much I didn't know. In my opinion, this set of old documentaries from the 1950's is an excellent commmentary on that great, terrible War, and the crucial part the United States played in ending that war. I learned SO MUCH from watching it, which I have done several times already. This collection is well worth the money, and in my opinion, should be seen be all Americans, to help them gain a greater understanding of the obligation of leadership America has given in the past. We DID save the world from Nazism and the Japanese. War is hell, whenever and wherever, and the "good guys" have an obligation to help end wars. The musical score by Richard Rodgers is absolutely wonderful, and the adaptations of it for the different sequences is charming and appropriate! Anyone should love this! I just think this a well-done piece of journalism, and packaged wonderfully with the beautiful music. The format of the DVDs is also so easy to access. Pauline

While Victory at Sea uses actual WWII footage, it tends to repeat the same clips quite a few times in every episode.
VAS is informative and covers the war from it's earliest beginings in China and Poland. It covers both the Atlantic and Pacific fronts, as well as the Mediteranian Sea.
I learned quite a bit about the War by watching this 3 DVD Collection
My biggest gripe would be that there is no provision to play all of the episodes. You have to select each one manually.

This is one of the great WWII documentaries made for television. It has a great Richard Rodgers music score. All 26 episodes are included. It was a very groundbreaking series. Over 13,000 hours of footage gathered from the US, British, German and Japanese navies during WWII were perused in the making of these compelling episodes. Produced in 1952. 3 Discs.
