Movie synopsis

Einar (Kirk Douglas), a hideously scarred Viking warrior, seeks land acquisition and the hand of the beautiful Princess Morgana (Janel Leigh). Einar crosses paths with Eric (Tony Curtis) who has his sights set on the same prizes. The two have more in common than they know; unbeknownst to one another, they are brothers. This 1958 epic was based on an actual Viking, Ragnar Lothbrok, a sadistic and adventurous sailor. While not very rooted in fact, the film is a rousing adventure with lusty, violent imagery very bold for its time. A scene where Janet Leigh's clothing is ripped, enabling her to row a boat and exposing her back was considered very risque and undoubtedly added to the film's stellar performance at the box office. Ernest Borgnine shines as Ragnar and Jack Cardiff's photography is breathtaking. An opening animated historical prelude is narrated by Orson Welles.

Another American Classic Rediscovered

I bought this flick because Action/Adventure films of this era, say 1950-the mid 70s, are some of the best done American films ever. Genre' not withstanding. Also, I never got to see this as a kid in the 60s.
Rich in plot,a bit more romance than was needed, but with T. Curtis in the cast,no more than was necessary. Lavish sets, most of which were full size repro's built by very gifted artisans from ancient sketches,( the scenes of the "Long Hall"& the three longboats are extremely immpressive).
Vetereran acting;Kirk Douglass at his villainest best. Tony Curtis believable.Ernest Borgnine(if you grew-up watching Mc Hales Navy as I did, you won't recognize him) was superb as the Viking Chief Raagnar. The ever-lovely Janet Leigh was radiant. The supporting cast meshed well to make this a believable tale.
All of this coupled with R. Fleischer's direction and America's matchless Technicolor make this a timeles classic deserving of a place in any collection.Compared to foreign films (I bought Last Of The Vikings-Camerron Mitchell)many of which were very well done, suffered from inferior film quality and SCCRRRRATCHY dubbed soundtracks as a whole. No comparrison!
Over the last few weeks,I've loaned this film to many friends, some older, younger,or my age, none of whom were eager to give it back. Good Night, and "MAY GOD BLESS"

WE HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS DVD FOR ALONG TIME. GREAT SHOW. GLAD TO SEE SOME OF THE OLD MOVIES ON DVD, SO WE CAN ENJOY THEM ALL THE TIME. NOT JUST WHEN ON THE TNT CHANNEL. KIRK DOUGLAS AND TONY CURTIS ARE GREAT. I HAD FORGOTTEN THAT ERNEST BORGNINE WAS IN IT TOO.

An enormously worthwhile and absorbing film! I think The Vikings, produced in 1958, could easily be used in any history education setting where (older)kids or adults can stomach a bit of gore, and realistic but not distasteful romance, plus PLENTY of raucous behavior! (roasted meat piled high on feast tables, huge frothy vat of mead, serving girls with horns overflowing for the hairy, brave, he-man warriors, etc!!) (Hey, what was a Viking without raucous behavior?) It is just beautifully filmed, seems very well researched, and certainly is well acted. The athletic feats of Kirk Douglas and others are pretty astonishing. The scenery, wooden boats, the castle, the sea, the cinematography, etc, are just fabulous. For some reason I had never seen this film and I was born the year it was made! After just a few minutes of viewing it became one of my all-time favorite films!
