Ellen Grier returns with her husband and children to their midwestern Catholic hometown to live with her narrow-minded in-laws, coping with the family's eccentricity and confronting a hidden secret festering in her husband's past. Reissue. (A CBS-TV movie, releasing Spring 2005, starring Mary-Louise Parker) (General Fiction)

In a stark, troubling, yet ultimately triumphant celebration of self-determination, award-winning author A. Mannete Ansay re-creates a stifling world of guilty and pain, and the tormented souls who inhabit it. It is 1972 when circumstance carries Ellen Grier and her family back to Holly's Field, Wisconsin. Dutifully accompanying her newly unemployed husband, Ellen has brought her two children into the home of her in-laws on Vinegar Hill--a loveless house suffused with the settling dust of bitterness and routine--where calculated cruelty is a way of life preserved and perpetuated in the service of a rigid, exacting and angry God. Behind a facade of false piety, there are sins and secrets in this place that could crush a vibrant young woman's passionate spirit. And here Ellen must find the straight to endure, change, and grow in the all-pervading darkness that threatens to destroy everything she is and everyone she loves.

"Ms. Ansay's gift for minute observation allows her to create a place so palpably dreadful that readers will wish they didn't remember 'Vinegar Hill' as clearly as they will."

A gripping tale of a woman's struggle to save her marriage against seemingly insurmountable odds. The struggle turns to one of self-discovery as we learn to know the exceptionally finely developed characters.

Their flaws are all recognizable in those we know (hopefully from afar), and their strenths make us like them in spite of their flaws.

This is a dark book of a woman's journey to self-empowerment. It's not pretty, but it's all too real.

I purchased this book based upon Oprah Winfrey's recommendation, specifically, her book club.

I was very disappointed. I expected a book that was horrifying and gripping, but I found it to be dull and boring. There was no excitement whatsoever. I read the entire book, hoping that it just started out slow, and would get more interesting as I delved deeper into the book. That just wasn't the case. If you are looking for a book written in monotone verbiage, then this may be for you. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It is simply boring and unexciting. Sorry, Oprah.
