Movie synopsis

The star-struck denizens of backwater burg Blaine, Missouri, gear up for their chance in the limelight when their community theatre impresario promises them that talent scout Mort Guffman will attend the opening of their sesquicentennial gala, a musical revue called "Red, White, and Blaine." A charming "mockumentary" co-scripted and directed by that genre's unofficial kingpin, Christopher Guest (of THIS IS SPINAL TAP fame).

Guest, Levy and the entourage shine!

Created: 03/08/09
The only thing better than 1 movie featuring no less than half a dozen comedic whizzes- i.e. Eugene Levy, Christopher Guest, Catherine O'Hara, and Parker Posey- is two, three, and four such films. If you love "Spinal Tap", "A Mighty Wind", "For Your Consideration" and "Best in Show" then "Guffman" is just waiting for you. The show focuses around this mediocre group of stage actors who are putting on a show, all with the notion that famed theatre critic Guffman will be there to critique. In a tribute to Samuel Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" the title character never shows, but the antics that play out are well worth the wait. A fantastic find!

Waiting for Guffman - A Christopher Guest Cult DVD

Created: 10/03/06
A must own DVD for any improv / free-form comedy fan... or for any fan of Christopher Guest. Waiting for Guffman was Christopher Guest's first major, slightly-mainstream movie since the 1984 classic "This is Spinal Tap." Waiting for Guffman came in 1996 - before "Best in Show" and "A Mighty Wind". As Guest is best known for - its his regular cast improving a bizarre plot - and the humor arrives from the honest, sarcastic dialouge and acting. Waiting for Guffman - also like all Christopher Guest movies - has tremendous 'reply' value... by this I meant that the movie gets funnier with each watch.

Cast of Waiting for Guffman: Bob Balaban, Catherine O'Hara, Christopher Guest, Eugene Levy, Fred Willard, Parker Posey, Paul Dooley

Christopher Guest is just as funny as ever.

I bought this DVD because I'm a huge fan of Christopher Guest. He always makes me giggle with the outrageous characters he creates. For this film he teams up with Eugene Levy to write this "madcap gem". It's as cute as I remember it from when I first saw it years ago. Then when I learned that this DVD contained a feature-length audio commentary by Guest and Levy, I knew I had to have it. For me, sometimes the commentary is better than the film. In this case both the film and commentary were enjoyable.

If only more movies were so delightfully witty and fun!

If you haven't seen this movie than you are missing out if you love funny! The cast is unforgettable and eerily realistic in this most glorious comedy about a small town's big day. Be sure to check out the rest of their films: This is Spinal Tap, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind and For Your Consideration. Can't wait to see what they'll think of next and sorry if I failed to mention any other of their comedic masterpieces.

This is a really funny movie!

This is the second in a series of great movies starring and directed by Christopher Guest. "Waiting for Guffman" is a hilarious behind the scenes view of local theater. My friends and I have probably watched my VHS copy of this movie a hundred times, and we still love it so I decided it was time to upgrade to DVD!
