    Movie synopsis

The high school scene of the Bronx in 1963 is ruled by rival gangs. The Wanderers are the Italians-only gang, ruled by a group of streetwise, fast-talkin' boys looking for good times and pretty girls in the streets of their tight-knit neighborhood. This charming vignette of 1960s Bronx life, set to the bopping music of the era, follows the lives of boyhood friends and fellow Wanderers Richie (Ken Wahl), Joey (John Friedrich), Turkey (Alan Rosenberg), and newcomer Perry (Tony Ganios) as they fight their local competition, the Baldies, a group of menacing bald-headed toughies, and struggle to make it to a big football rumble with the slick Del Bombers, the local rival black gang. Along the way, Richie is forced to face the repercussions of a romance with a local Mafia daughter (Toni Kalem) while Perry and Joey realize the truth about their hard-living parents (including Olympia Dukakis as Joey's mother). All the while the boys carouse and party at their neighborhood hangouts, living life on the edge while struggling to avoid the other gangs. THE WANDERERS, directed by Philip Kaufman (who later went on to direct THE RIGHT STUFF and THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING), is a simultaneously nostalgic and bittersweet vision of street life in 1960s New York, exploring the hardships of growing up on the streets and protecting gang members at any cost while facing the future and losing childhood innocence. The soundtrack features classic tunes by Dion, the Shirelles, the Four Seasons, the Angels, and others.

    The Wanderers A Classic movie

    Created: 30/03/08
I saw this movie when it came out in 1979, (I think it was '79) based on friends recommendations. I loved it. Great story line, soundtrack, and plenty of action.
I grew up in an area where "gangs" (and I use that term very loosely, nothing compared to this movie)were prevalent, but not to the ethnic extent that is portrayed in this movie. Still, it reminded me of my youth, because unlike today's gangs, we did not use weapons.
    Enough about my misspent youth.
The characters are for the most part believable. They pretty much cover the bases on all your different types of people. The different gangs are diverse and humorous at the same time. As are the members of the Wanderers.

It is a violent movie, but personally, I think it fits right in with the times and situations. That's just my humble opinion.
Definitely not a movie for kids. But, I think it's fine for teens.
Especially in this day and age.
One other thing I really liked about this movie is that it covered the assassination of John F Kennedy and the effect it had on everyday people.
Everyday people of all colors and creeds are crowded around store windows watching the news coverage of the assassination, crying.
It's one of this Country's most poignant times, and this film chronicles it.
    Very impressive to me.

The football game between the Wanderers and the Del Bombers is excellent.
That is, until the Ducky Boys decide to pay a visit.
What follows is mayhem that not all folks have seen.
    And thankfully so.

I, for one, have been in a similar situation, and let me tell you, this scene brought back memories that were long buried.
Looking back, I can't believe I was in a situation like that, but I was.

Nowadays, it terrifies me to think of being in that situation.
But when I was young, like the Wanderers, it was just something that happened, and you had to get through.

Bottom line is, great movie, well casted, great soundtrack and lots of interesting characters.

    Enjoy!

    The Wanderers An Old Classic

i like this movie because its a great movie about 1963 in the bronx. with actors no 1 ever heard of b 4 or after this film but an old good time movie. the music is great, classic cars, and these dudes r just plain cool. the only thing this movie lacked was hot rodding around the streets but in the bronx many people don t have cars. this movie i would rate a 9 out of 10 because the language is a little profane 4 younger viewers. this is a mans movie though they don t make classics like this anymore. i decided 2 buy this on dvd because i have it on an old tape and the audio and picture is nt very good. its also impossible 2 find on dvd.

This is a great movie! Im Italian and from Brooklyn New York, and everytime I see this movie it takes me back to the old neighborhood. I love the fact that these are real friends who stand up for eachother and fight for what they believe in. It has a beautiful choice of music and it takes you to a time when life was a little different. These were good guys, no guns, no knives, just use your fists, you know, tough guys. You need to see this if yous havent already and even if you have, watch it again!

    The Wanderers DVD

The movie is excellent. I had watched this a while ago and lately have been wanting to see it again, so I looked online and found it for a reasonable price. The movie is about senior high school kids growing up. They live in a place with a lot of different gangs. I found it interesting because of the scariness of the Ducky Boys. They were "zombie" like and scary when I first watched it. My husband was in jail while I was watching it and when Turkey was running away from the Ducky Boys it was really scary and exciting at the same time. This movie is EXCELLENT!
