Warren Haynes - Electric Blues & Slide Guitar (DVD, 2005)

Warren Haynes is one of my all time favorite guitarist. This DVD gives great insight to his playing technique and talent. It is slightly advanced but I would recommend to anyone who is interested in a deep lesson on hybrid blues and slide guitar. Warren gives great hints and tricks to playing the blues and slide that are indespensable. Hot Licks has only the best musicians who are on the cutting edge. Thanks to Warren Haynes for sharing and for Hot Licks for producing.

Warren Haynes is a superbly talented guitarist. To watch him perform is great. To learn from him is even better. This DVD is an upclose lesson, in which Warren explains electric blues guitar playing in a thorough manner. Though not intended for the beginner, a beginner can learn what it takes to play blues guitar. I waited a while to review this because I wanted to make a good review. The licks and phrases Warren shows can be adapted to your style, he makes this clear. The slide guitar part is really good. It's very difficult to learn to play slide guitar, most give up because they can't get the hang of it. In this DVD, Warren Haynes explains the what not to do's, which actually is THE most important thing when learning to play slide guitar. I wish I had this DVD when I was learning, it would have been very helpful. There are a few songs on this DVD where Warren is playing with a band, and this is a bonus. It is always good to see a great musician playing outside their norm.

This instructional DVD does not follow the typical formula. It does not introduce any theory or technique nor does it rehash things you can find elsewhere. Warren Haynes takes a more creative right-brain approach to what makes improvising solos and slide work for him. Don't expect any rules or guidelines from him. The general theme is to keep an open mind and do what works for you. BUT here are a few things that work for him to get you to think outside the box.
As far as negatives, there are a few. If you have the VHS tape and wonder about what the bonuses are on the DVD, there are not many. The promised bonuses are little more than a biography, a discography, and you can select the scenes. The biography and discography are just text, no video or audio.
If you already have the VHS, the only real reasonto buy this is to have something a bit more permenant than VHS and the ability to quickly access portions of the DVD instead of tedious fast forwarding and rewinding. If you don't have the VHS and you are looking for something to give you a shot of inspiration and motivation, this is an awesome video.

What really can one say abot Mr Haynes he is simply Brilliant one of the best guitar players & singers of our time...This DVD is done right and is plainly awesome just that simple you want it buy nothing else to say
