Product description

Synopsis
In an alternate 1985, superheroes have existed for more than 30 years and have endured the gamut of public opinion--from acceptance to polite disdain to outright hostility. Now someone is killing the second generation of superheroes, and, as the threat of nuclear holocaust looms over a dystopic world, the killer must be found before it's too late. Originally published in 12 separate comic books, which are collected here along with some additional material, this book is perhaps the seminal graphic novel.

Publisher's Note
SOON TO BE A FEATURE FILM!
This Hugo Award-winning graphic novel chronicles the fall from grace of a group of super-heroes plagued by all-too-human failings. Along the way, the concept of the super-hero is dissected as the heroes are stalked by an unknown assassin.
One of the most influential graphic novels of all time and a perennial bestseller, WATCHMEN has been studied on college campuses across the nation and is considered a gateway title, leading readers to other graphic novels such as V FOR VENDETTA, BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS and THE SANDMAN series.

Industry Reviews
"It's tempting, and entirely possible, to appreciate WATCHMEN solely at a microscopic level, to lose oneself in Moore and Gibbons's multilayered narrative techniques or to unpack their allusions to everything from 'The Threepenny Opera' to the Book of Job to Bob Dylan's 'Desolation Row." But the story of WATCHMEN, carefully plotted and decidedly finite, deserves equally close attention, as its acuteness has not dulled with age."
(11/20/2005)

"A work of ruthless psychological realism, it's a landmark in the graphic novel medium. It would be a masterpiece in any."

What 'Watchmen' can teach us...

Created: 02/04/09
I have spent my life up 'til now reading comics and graphic novels purely for their entertainment value. Silly me. Had I paid more attention to the underlying messages contained within the first time I read this graphic novel, I wouldn't be having to confess to my sin of 'reading solely for entertainment'.

Having said that, I must also confess that I'm hooked on this genre of literature. 'Watchmen' is a prime example of literate story-telling combined with the kind of social commentary that is necessary in the world we live in...and perhaps even more to the point these days. And when you add in the finely illustrated content you have a very captivating, educating, and potent form of entertainment.

I highly recommend this book.

Impeccable story telling

Created: 30/12/08
Alan Moore takes story telling to a whole new level with character development that is quite possibly the most groundbreaking of any. Watchmen is possily the most celebrated of all graphic novels.

In an alternate 1985, costumed vigilantes are made illegal by the US government with few exceptions. When it is found that the Comedian, a government sponsored masked hero, is murdered, exiled detective Rorschach seeks answers to avenge his former collegue. What is found spirals into a plot with global implications as the world slides closer and closer to nuclear holocaust.

For 20 years there have been many attempts to bring this tale to the big screen, but success will finally arrive in march 2009.

For now do yourself a favor and get this story. $20 max on ebay couldnt be better spent.

Watchmen

This has got to be one of the best graphic novels in history. I have seen it on book shelves for years and never picked it up. With the movie coming out, it peaked my interest just a little more. After reading the Watchmen I was so disappointed in myself for not reading it sooner. Now that I have read it I have become a Watchman fan! I can not put Watchmen in any one category; it stands out on level all of its own. Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons at their best.

Watchmen novel review.

I have always enjoyed the Watchmen. I read this years ago growing up with friends. I love the depth of the characters. Alan Moore was a comic genius. This is one of the best graphic novels ever made. I bought it so I could read it and enjoy it again, before the movie in March.
Watchmen follows a group of former superheroes in an alternate version of 1985. This group called themselves "The Watchmen"

"Watchmen" is more relevant now more than ever!

This novel definitely deserves its spot on the Best Seller list. Alan Moore's sarcastic, but poignant, view of society speaks volumes about the state of the world. The characters are true to life, as well as their reactions to their environment and their role in it. Rorschach is the social conscience, constantly being frustrated and disgusted by society's vices and failings. Dr. Manhattan is the brilliant scientist, too intent on his own intellect to have maintained any social or moral connections to humanity. Adrian Viedt is the self-appointed savior of the world, fully prepared to sacrifice humanity to save it. The supporting characters carry their own inherent demons, which add more background and color to the story of what ultimately becomes mankind's hope for the future. Awesome story and graphics. This is a true recommended read! Don't miss this epic!
