Movie synopsis

Based on the novel by BABE author Dick King-Smith, THE WATER HORSE: LEGEND OF THE DEEP is set in Scotland during World War II, and focuses on Angus (Alex Etel), a young boy who discovers an unusual egg at Loch Ness. When the egg hatches to reveal a dinosaur-like creature, Angus finds that he has a unique pet--a mythical "water horse," which he names Crusoe. Complicating matters are Crusoe's fast growth rate and soldiers stationed near the lake, factors that make it very tricky to keep the friendly beastie a secret.A thoroughly likable family film directed by Jay Russell (TUCK EVERLASTING), THE WATER HORSE provides an intriguing spin on the classic boy-and-his-dog tale. While Etel, who won over audiences in MILLIONS, ably carries the movie, he is supported by a topnotch ensemble that includes Emily Watson as his mother, newcomer Priyanka Xi as his sister, and Ben Chaplin as a good-natured handyman. Primarily sharing the screen with Etel, however, is the Loch Ness Monster-in-the-making, which is wonderfully rendered by Weta, the company behind the digital effects for THE LORD OF THE RINGS films. Both cute and--in his larger state--intimidating, Crusoe strikes up a surprisingly believable relationship with Angus, providing the heart of this beautifully photographed story.

I saw the trailer and the making of The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep, I don't know, something about this film just captured me. It just seemed like a really creative story and looked like a great family film. So, I decided to go ahead and check it out and I have to say that it really did live up to my expectations, it was a cute film for the whole family to enjoy. It's a different version of Free Willy I think, lol, sounds crazy, I know, but I think you'll agree when you see it. It's definitely a tear jerker, but one of the better films I've seen in a little while in the theater. It was made very well and I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more notice, but like I said, I think I just saw something special in the story. We haven't had a Lochness monster movie, all we know is the infamous picture that has never been prove to be fake or real, and The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep tells us the story behind that picture.

Agnus is a young and lonely boy in Scotland, his father who he was very close with has just gone off into WWII to fight. His home has just been taken over by English soldiers to fight off the German's. His family has lost something too, life and laughter. But when Agnus comes across what looks like a strange rock, is actually an egg left by an Water Horse, the rarest of all creatures, there can only be one in the world at a time. But he takes care of the baby who is water bound, while protecting him from his mom and the soldiers. But when the water horse, he named Crusoe, has grown too big, he and a family friend put him in the Lochness Lake where he is spotted and is now known as the infamous Lochness Monster.

The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep is truly and honestly a good film. It has such a magical touch like The Secret Garden, where it's a serious story, but it's for the family. I thought it was very well made, the visual effects are very good and not over done, which was great, because obviously the Lochness monster is going to be CGI, but they made it look so real, and so lovable, lol, like I said, I did cry, it's a tear jerker. The characters are terrific, they really found terrific actors for the roles. Alex Etel does a beautiful break out performance as Angus and was so charming. I would highly recommend The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep, it's one of the best family films I have seen in a while.

A "family-Friendly" version of "Nessie"!

Created: 29/01/10
I enjoyed this film more than I thought I would. This take on a family-friendly version of the Loch Ness monster has a well-developed story with excellent cinematography and CGI effects. During World War II, a shy, introverted young boy finds an unusual egg at the shoreline that hatches into a mythical creature called "The Water Horse". This is a story of their bonding and a series of adventures. Top-notch Blu ray picture and sound quality. Still entertaining on repeat viewings!

Great family film

Created: 06/05/08
Set in the beautiful lochs of Scotland, it is a heart warming tale of a lonely boy who desperately needs, and misses, his father who is away at war during WW2. An enchanting weave of Loch Ness monster lore, and an explanation of Nessi's origins, and a sometimes sad and chilling story of Nazi invasion. The classic tale of relationships between a young boy, his pet, and a surrogate father figure, all of whom aid the boy in understanding the cycle of life and the value of trust and loyalty in all those relationships.

The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (blu ray)

Created: 18/12/09
Excellent acting across the board, and with beautifyl scenery that is well exemplified on blu ray. Some scenes are a bit contrived, but overall the movie comes across as generally believable. Couldn't help but see the similarity with "Free Willy", although the acting is much better with this one. Recommended as a very good "family viewing" movie, but not necessarily one that would captivate very young viewers for an extended period of time. An enjoyable movie that I will watch again, and one that is worthy of adding to your blu ray collection.
