Good Action!

If you like the ocean, you'll enjoy this movie, an interesting and somewhat unusual fantasy; a futuristically set film with many great action scenes. I personally liked the cast, especially the adorable young actress who played Nola, her believable performance gradually endearing her character to the audience. I generally like Kevin Costner films, although his role as a hardened, unfeeling loner didn't quite work in this one, what is evidently a genuinely soft, tender side of his personality continually bleeding through (perhaps calculated by the director as it did not detract from Costner's performance or the plot, simply knowing that beneath Costner's cool, steely exterior, he wasn't the mean, calloused murderer his reputation required). I couldn't understand how water-breathing Costner managed to blow up a huge sea-going creature for food without also blowing himself up (although I'm sure there's a perfectly logical sci-fi explanation), Costner portraying a genetically evolved merman of incredible athletic ability (gills, webbed feet--no fins or scales that I could see), an unwelcome hybrid species who could do just about anything (and did--land, sea or air). The film's ending was not what I expected or wanted, saddened for the lonely, unattached pair he left behind, uncertain regarding his reluctant promise to visit and stay in touch. As fantasy movies go, I very much enjoyed this one, recommending its uniquely crafted mode of high-seas adventure.

Mad Max on a boat

Created: 12/12/09
This is a great film in the style of the Mad Max series. Both Costner and Hopper give solid performances. The movie is at times comedic (thanks mainly to Hopper's hilarious character) but it's a sci-fi drama/action for the most part. The director did a good job in conveying what the world and its survivors would be if there was no dry land anywhere. Life would turn in a kill-or-be-killed scenario where only those who could adapt would survive and even thrive. Having said that, if you are scientifically-minded try not to think too much in its inconsistencies and take it for what it is. So if you like sailing, oceans, etc you will probably like this flick.

Waterworld

Waterworld is one of those movies that has always simply entertained me! I'm not looking for some "realistic" look at the future or believable story line but simply an escape from reality and of course this movie delivers with some real tongue in cheek moments. Costner delivers as well but sometimes the script and his "accent" is a little awkward at "tender" moments but there are not a lot of them fortunately. Simply fantasy... don't get bogged down in reality when you are looking at something meant to entertain. Some of the special effects are really great and some are simply a bit over the top, but this is one of those films that still entertains with its treatment of some of the interplay between the actors. Most actors don't like working with children, but Costner seems to do well with that and does not suffer for it. Critically panned, but wonderfully entertaining and hugely expensive to make, but it made it's investment back and I'm sure DVD sales have not hurt it. This movie was simply not made for critics, so enjoy it for its characters such as Hopper as the "Deacon" and don't blink or you'll miss Jack Black's bit part. Love the Hazeltine throwaway reference for those of you who remember the Exxon Valdez. It is a great way to miss all the "commercial time" when you stumble across it on TV and can't resist to watch! Remember... just get lost in a fictional fantasy and enjoy!

Waterworld DVD

Created: 21/05/09
Kevin Costner is a bit robotic in this flick. Hardly no emotion from him. Great fantasy storyline (very creative to make a 'water world' and have the leading man be half fish/half man). Love the battle scenes with jet skis! All-in-all the show lacked emotion and didn't keep my interest (watched it over a 2-day period) which is rare for me.
