Synopsis
This classic book by anthropologist Michael Harner is often credited with sparking the popularity of shamanism in the West. Having studied this animistic religion himself in cultures all over the world and as a practicing shaman, Harner introduces the ancient traditions to the general public. The author not only outlines the essentials of shamanism (drumming, dances, chanting, etc.) as they are practiced in various cultures, but also teaches readers how to become shamans themselves by reaching an elevated consciousness.

This is the 10th anniversary edition of this book.

Publisher's Note

Thousands have found renewed health and increased sensory awareness through the Feldenkrais method as explained in Awareness Through Movement. Here is a way for people of every age to integrate physical and mental development into a new, invigorating wholeness. Feldenkrais provides a modern-day, practical program for the perennial ideal of a healthy mind in a healthy body. His down-to-earth method carefully avoids any mystical component and never obliges any pupil to master abstruse theories. Exercises for posture, eyes, imagination, and more will simultaneously build better body habits and focus new dimensions of awareness, self-image, and human potential.

This classic on shamanism pioneered the modern shamanic renaissance. It is the foremost resource and reference on shamanism. Now, with a new introduction and a guide to current resources, anthropologist Michael Harner provides the definitive handbook on practical shamanism -- what it is, where it came from, how you can participate.

Ten years after it was first published, this is still the leading resource and reference for all those interested in cross-cultural and current forms of shamanism--now with a new introduction and a list of current shamanic resources.

SHAMAN IS NOT AN AMERICAN INDIAN WORD

Created: 15/05/09
No traditional Native American or First Nations group calls their spiritual teachers, leaders or elders 'shamans'! Look for 1000 years, you won't find the word in the original languages of the Indigenous population. This term IS native to Siberia. This OFFENSIVE word was coined by 'academia' to describe a variety of unconnected spiritual traditions that bear perhaps superficial resemblances to one another. This lumping together of diverse spiritual traditions under the term "shamanism" has been exposed many times for what it is, but New Agers continue to misuse it. New Age, "global" shamanism is characterized by cultural appropriation, eclecticism and personal spiritual connections.
If you want to buy into such CULTURE THEFT & offend the Indigenous Tribes, at least admit to yourselves that there are NO 'shamans' in ANY Tribe, & that the man who wrote this has offended many by his words. Harner's reputation as an academic was essentially destroyed when he "went native" and began to represent himself as a shaman.
Feel free to google his name plus the word plastic & see what comes up.

Impeccable and Authentic...

Created: 14/04/08
I found this to be a wonderful and fascinating book about the realism of the practice of Shamanism. For those who may be "on the fence", so to speak, as to whether or not this is the path they'd like to choose, I highly recommend reading this book, but with a clear warning that this author lays it all out there for you to see. You will either embrace his honesty about the true art of Shamanism (The Healing, The Other Worlds, and the Intense Connection with The Sacred) or you will be terrified & decide this is NOT the path for you! I embraced it and it's beauty! I feel anyone questioning whether or not Shamanism is something they may or may not be interested in, should read this book first. It's an excellant, informative & explosive read full of everything one could possibly want to know! I have a huge library of Shaman books, but this one is by far the best, and, the most "raw"!

The Way of the Shaman by Michael J. Harner (1990)

A great book to become aware of what Shamanism can offer the world. These healing practices seem like the old way, but really the "new paradigm" we need to use to live into for a peaceful future where everyone is free to be who they are without fear.
