Album Notes
Originally issued on CD without the song "Last Night When We Were Young."Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Nelson Riddle (arranger).Includes liner notes by Pete Welding.Digitally remastered by Larry Walsh (Capitol Recording Studios).Personnel: Frank Sinatra (vocals).Audio Remasterers: Larry Walsh; Bob Norberg.Liner Note Author: Pete Welding.Recording information: 03/01/1954-03/04/1955.Photographer: William Claxton.Arranger: Nelson Riddle.Recorded in 1955, this superbly arranged and sung set of slow ballads can lay claim to being the world's first "concept album." Of course, in classical music, song cycles had been around since Schubert, but a whole set of pop tunes arranged around a central theme or mood was something new in popular music. With the advent of the LP in 1953, commercial pop music was beginning to take itself seriously. As to be expected, Frank Sinatra did it first and best.Sinatra is in utter command of this material--vocally relaxed yet focused on conveying what these hand-picked "torch" songs still have to say to the modern listener. Throughout he projects his signature manly vulnerability without seeming maudlin or even sentimental. The singer is helped immeasurably in this task by Nelson Riddle's deftly scored chamber arrangements which include brilliant use of celeste and guitar on several tracks (cf. Alec Wilder's "I'll Be Around", Kay Swift's "Can't We Be Friends".) A must for any listener even remotely interested in the Great American Songbook.

Editorial Reviews
Ranked #7 in The NME Top 30 Heartbreak Albums - ...Smokey, bleak and at times desolate, it is easy to trace the line back to Billie Holiday....His voice has rarely had such devastating effect.
NME

The most indispensable Sinatra item. A collection of songs about unrequited love, not merely sung but lived out by a performer seemingly intent on sharing his own heartbreak with the world...
Mojo

Ranked #100 in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time - [The album] sustains a midnight mood of loneliness and lost love - it's a prototypical concept album.

Sinatra, Wee Small Hours, It doesn't get any better!

Created: 29/12/06
To say this is timeless is an understatement. This is the very best collection of songs of unrequited love done by anyone ever. Period. All the songs are recognized as standards now, but as to be expected, Frank Sinatra sort of rediscoverd many of them, and re-did them first and best. Throughout his career he'd pick the pearls from a failed theatre production, or hear a song and know how it should be done, and then do it. Nelson Riddle's arrangements are beautiful and somewhat understated-the perfect backdrop for a quiet and introspective listening experience, and Sinatra's near perfect vocals make this a must have. I believe the sonics on the earlier cd (from about 1989 I think) edition are better than the remaster done on the reissued concepts box set. Whoever did the remastering on the concepts ressue circa 1998 or 2000 got a bit too ambitious with the noise reduction. The subtle high end character suffers for it, but if you're not intimately familiar with this recording you probably wouldn't notice any of that. It certainly sounds clean and amazingly good otherwise. It's a 1955 recording but you'd swear it was done last year! There is a review here that expresses disappointment-frankly that's astonishing. The performances and the cover are recognized as among the best of the genre. The cover art is famous and is very much like an Edward Hopper scene-for anyone familiar with his works. Buy it and sit back. As you take it in you'll be taken away, as Frank makes you think he's singing for only you!

This " Ol'Blue Eyes" CD made it on Rolling Stone magazine top 100 CD's of all times.
Sinatra recorded this album in 1955 after the painful breakup with his love at the time, Ava Gardner. You can hear the pain and melancholy in his voice on these cuts.
A must have for lovers of Sinatra at his best.

frank in his prime, each tune masterfully arranged, combined with superb orchestration, and of course francis' impeccable phrasing, makes this a super enjoyable blast from the past. highly recommended. if u r over fifty and spending quality time with a member of the opposite sex, u just might get lucky with this cd playing....

CD Sinatra "In The Wee Small Hours"

Created: 03/06/06
This CD was touted in the NY Times as the best Sinatra recording of his career. I found it to be perhaps the worst. From the amateurish painting on the jewel box cover to the selection of songs and lyrics I was terribly disappointed.
