These sessions highlight the widely accepted jazz-pop combination he achieved on these Verve and A&M releases, which followed a four-year stint on Riverside where he attracted a limited, mainly jazz audience. The guitarist employed a winning formula that combined his straight-ahead jazz style while exploring current trends in pop music that encompassed Latin, funk, and string-laden arrangements. The impressive coverage of guest musicians includes Herbie Hancock, Ray Barretto, Ron Carter, Jimmy Smith, and Clark Terry. ~ Al Campbell

Wes Montgomery's Finest Hour

Created: 21/07/10
Whether or not it's his 'best', 'favorite', or most accessible music, the Verve years of Wes Montgomery were a time when he reached out to a much larger audience, yet still seemed to remain true to himself. Despite the claims of some jazz purists that it was a 'selling out' of sorts for him to play popular melodies, and though he himself says on the front of the CD that instead of it being Jazz, it's popular music with a 'jazz concept to it', it's a neat addition to any Wes Montgomery collection that tries to be complete, and it's from the period when he was the most 'successful', hence, it's an important part of any comprehensive Wes collection. The arrangements are fully orchestrated, well mixed, and offer a smoothe, relaxing flavor for an afternoon of listening.
