West Side Story (DVD, 2003, Single Disc Version; Holiday O-Ring)

Movie synopsis

Considered one of the most popular musicals of all time, WEST SIDE STORY earned director Robert Wise an Oscar for Best Director as well as nine other Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Realistically portrayed characters and their surroundings and expert editing complementing innovative dance sequences mark this highly stylized modern-day Romeo and Juliet tale. The stage is set in New York's Upper West Side in the 1950s, where the area's slums are plagued by racial tensions acted on by two rival gangs: the Puerto Rican Sharks and the Caucasian Jets. In the middle of this mess is young, innocent Maria (Natalie Wood), a Puerto Rican seamstress whose brother, Bernardo (George Chakiris), is the leader of the Sharks. Despite the warnings of Anita (Rita Moreno), Bernardo's fiery girlfriend, Maria falls in love with a young, hopeful Polish boy, Tony (Richard Beymer), who used to belong to the Jets, now headed by Riff (Russ Tamblyn). When Tony, on Maria's urging, tries to stop a rumble between the gangs, tragedy ensues, marking their dedicated love affair with violence and desperation. The infectious, lyrical landmark score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim help round out one of the greatest musical experiences ever captured on film.

West Side Story

Romeo and Juliet set in the Bowery of New York. Very good music by Leonard Bernstien and Stephan Sondheim, and great choreography by Jerome Robbins.
The Jets and the Sharks are rival gangs fighting over the turf where they all live. The mixing of the two gangs is full of tention and each is ready to fight.
When a rumble is called for that's when it hits the fan. Two gang members get killed and the sister of the Sharks leader falls in love with the friend of the Jets leader. Things go downhill from there. And in the end all that remains is Maria.
This an updated version of Romeo and Juliet with a slight twist.
This is another of my favorite movies that I have enjoyed for years and had to have in my collection.

West Side Story - A Timeless classic

Created: 06/11/09
This modern-day "Romeo & Juliet" has remained a classic for almost 50 years. You really don't have to be a fan of the musical to enjoy this movie. There is a beautiful love story, staring the late Natalie Wood, who is always worth watching (those of us who followed her career in the 1960's will know what I mean). Yet, whether you are a Baby-Boomer, or a Generation-X individual, her excellent acting ability and classic beauty can be enjoyed always, thanks to the miracle of film. Yes, and guys, don't think you're too "macho" to watch a musical. The underlying theme of gangs and street fights can capture your attention, too. I have seen this movie many times, but it is one worth owning, so I purchased it to replace my old VHS copy. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

West Side Story

I remembered that movie from my teen years when it first came out. It is basically a musical/love story with gang rivalry involved. Kind of a modern day Romeo and Juliet type movie. I loved the original actors and wanted to take a trip down memory lane as that movie was one of my favorites when I was a teen. I disliked the ending but then Romeo and Juliet had an unhappy ending too.I liked Natalie Wood and George Chakiris and Russ Tamblin as actors of my day.

West Side Story, always a classic, always relevant.

This musical is still relevant today. The costumes and dialogue may date it which, for some, make it seem a bit hokey, but the music, dancing and classic story line are never out of style. Gangs, love, death, and family are as much a part of life today as the time the movie was made or even in Shakespeare's time for this is really a bit of Romeo and Juliet. The actors, dancers, and singers are very strong and well directed. The choreography and scenery are truly wonderful. A little on the long side, the music will keep you in your seats. Its no wonder this movie walked away with so many academy awards.

Excellent Rodger's and Hammerstein musical.

I have always loved this 1950's style Romeo and Juliet. My sister took me to see it when I was young. I asked what it was about and she described it as a modern day Romeo and Juliet. I said, "What's that?" So to me Romeo and Juliet is more like an antique West Side Story. The songs are so well written as is the music and choreography. I bought this to add to my DVD collection.
