Movie synopsis

Bizarre, whimsical, and touching scenes mark WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAPE. Johnny Depp is Gilbert, the eldest brother in a large family of a very large (morbidly obese, actually) mother (Darlene Cates) who hasn't left the house since her husband committed suicide years before. Leonardo DiCaprio, who received an Academy Award nomination for his role, is Arnie, Gilbert's retarded teenage brother who needs constant supervision (he's often found scaling the town water tower). Caring, passive Gilbert is burdened beyond reason, living a dead-end life in a dying small town, stocking shelves at a grocery store whose business being taken over by the new mall supermarket. Gilbert's best friends (Crispin Glover and John C. Reilly) see their futures in the form of undertaker and Burger Barn owner, and Gilbert's other social life is taken up with a random affair with a frustrated and reckless housewife (Mary Steenburgen). Everyone needs the constantly patient Gilbert, whose future seems equally grim until well-traveled, straightforward Becky (Juliette Lewis) and her nonconformist grandmother (Penelope Branning) come to town. Their camper is in need of repair, so Becky stays long enough to actually have an effect on Gilbert, making his new life spiral in wild ways. Based on the novel by Peter Hedges (who also wrote the screenplay), WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAPE is quirky, irresistible, and endearingly eccentric without being a freak show.

Emotional Rollercoaster

Created: 02/03/11
This is coming from a guy who normally likes comedies and feel-good PG or PG-13 movies with predictable plots, canned laughs, etc., ect.

If you like Edward Scissorhands (as I do) you will still probably like this movie; But don't expect a bright, whimsical, easy-viewing movie like this other Johnny Depp movie.

Expect to dive into the character's emotions (when they are finally presented). The part I like about this movie is that while character motives (especially the title character Gilbert Grape) are vague throughout the movie, everything ties together at the end.

Certain plot points are stressful and even weird, but these 90's quirks add to the enjoyability of the movie. Ironic comedy and stereotypical small town roles make the movie accessible as far as a drama goes.

It's a good movie to watch when you think you have the weight of the world on your shoulders. Johnny Depp's acting is fair, but you are a fan, it can be overlooked. John C. Reiley has a hilarious role as Gilbert Grape's friend.

Overall, it's an emotional roller-coaster. If you think you have a dysfunctional family, or are feeling down about yourself, watch What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and you might have a change of heart.

Very Good Movie!

Created: 02/04/06
This is a great movie to watch for any Johnny Depp Fan. It is a tear jerker and has hints of romance. This is also one of the first movies I ever saw with Leonardo DiCaprio in it. He is also wonderful in this movie. Story of a family that has many hills to climb but stick together during it all. Their mother who is over weight has not been out of the house since her husband died. Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio) is mentally handicap and needs constant supervision which usually falls on Gilbert (Depp). It is really a great movie and I would recommend it to anyone.

Fantastic Movie

If you have not yet seen this movie then I envy you becaus you get to watch it for the first time!!!

How often do you find a entertaining movie with lovable, real charachters, that makes you think but doesn't preach, that feels so human yet so strange, and which is absolutley unpredictable?

Well, In my experience: Once.

No doubt about it. This film in one of a kind.

Johnny Depp is perfectley understated, letting all his emotions flow right below the surface. And Leonardo Dicaprios performance as Arnie is one of the greating example of flawless, fantastic acting. You just have to see it to understand how good he really is.

In fact, I can't think of a single person in this movie who I think was miscast or bad. They were all just a joy to watch.

I think the special thing about this movie is how sucked into the story and the charachters you get. Who doesn't see alittle of themselves in Gilbert? Who can help falling in love with arnie, worrying over him, and learning from him?

Do your self a favor and dont miss this. you'll be certain to see certain aspects of kife in a completley different way.

Great DVD.

I bought What's Eating Gilbert Grape last month and love this movie. It's fun for the whole family to watch. Watching Leo at such a young age really shows his early talent for acting. The DVD did not have any scratches or damage. Enjoy the show.

great movie

I love this movie because the entire ensemble cast is wonderful. Especially Johnny Depp as Gilbert, and Leo DiCaprio is amazingly believable as a young man with mental retardation. I work with adults with MR and he truly gets it! I am a collector of Johnny Depp's work and this is one of my favorites from Johnny as well. The story is very human and heartfelt, without being sappy or cheesy. Nice little moments of humor as well. I highly recommend it.
