    Bud Cort grows up

    Created: 07/02/07
This is an extremely rare movie that was a huge hit in Canada. Consequently, this is where it was filmed. Having read a great deal about the movie, and loving films about the Depression, I wanted to find a copy. It was very difficult, since the movie was out of print. But, one day a seller on E-Bay surprised me with a reasonably priced original VHS.
The movie, itself, deals with a young man, Bud Cort, setting off to Canada for work. His whole family sees him off. They are proud because work is scarce during the Depression. Upon arrival, he discovers that he's in the middle of nowhere.
Class starts and he immediately has trouble with the older kids. Some of them are much bigger than he is. Yet, he's not intimidated. In one of my favorite scenes, he has to take a strap to a student who's double Cort's size. It's a truly memorable scene in this mostly unmemorable movie.
All in all, it's worth watching, even though Cort's portrayal as the teacher is extremely dull.
