Product description

Synopsis
A shamanistic tradition connected with the earth and sky, Wicca involves communing with a spirit or spirits through naturally produced alternate states of consciousness, such as dancing, fasting, and chanting. For those Wiccans with no fellow practitioners within a reasonable distance, it becomes necessary to adapt these practices for solitary use. Many of the spells can function with the same amount of power if done correctly, and Cunningham--considered one of the key authors on the subject--here lays out the do's and don'ts. Everything from Sabbath days, spell etiquette, ceremonial costumes, and days of power are included, as is information on where to go to get in touch with other Wiccans. Cunningham is an intelligent writer whose descriptions of magic and the power of ritual fits nicely in with accepted theories from minds like Jung and Joseph Campbell. His writing does much to dispel the notions of magic and witchcraft as a bunch of hocus pocus; instead he makes a convincing case for this ancient system of knowledge as being something which our out-of-control technological world has shunned and derided at its own eco- and psychological peril.

A spirituality I can connect to, and a well written book.

Created: 27/04/11
I bought this book looking for a way to open myself fully to Wicca in a solitary setting. I can say that it more than met my expectations. It opened my mind to new ways of seeing things that I hadn't considered before. The author explained his beliefs in the only way I could have accepted, with open-mindedness and with clear, vibrant wording.

My only issue with the philosophy was a contradiction between the deities as beings of both light and dark, nature as good and evil, then a claim that using the energies of magic for ill intent or dark purposes somehow shamed or defiled them. I am not an individual who wishes to harm others, but from what I've seen of nature and its forces, is it really possible for anyone to gain anything without some loss on the part of someone or something else?

That said, the flexibility and reasonable, logical nature of the author's message was what truly helped me to see what I needed to do. Thank you, Scott!

Wicca by Scott Cunningham

Created: 05/03/11
This book is an extremely valuable tool for beginners just discovering the Craft. It is enlightening especially in regards to the spirituality of Wicca, with a run down of tools and how to create an altar. Included in it is a basic book of shadows to get the beginner started. Scott Cunningham stresses an open mind regarding Wicca, especially Solitary Wicca. He has a personable style with is easy to follow.

Absolute must!!

Cunningham's Guide to the solitary practitioner is an absolute must. With this book and The Spiral Dance by Starhawk(also recommended by yours truly)any beginning Wicca or pagan can learn the essential basics of practicing non-christian traditional earth based religion.

This particular book really sticks to the basics, but is a great introduction for someone who has no clue what Wicca is about. Cunningham had a talent for talking TO the reader not DOWN to them, making it a please read and easily understanable

I was very excited when i saw my package in the mail. It only took five days for me to receive my order. Im very satisfied. I ordered this book on halloween (10/31) 2009, which i think makes it very special. Im a beginner in wicca, so i need to start with the basics. So i decided to order this book. I dont know any Wiccans who can help me with the path of the religion i chose. So this book is good for me, since im a solitary practitioner. I've heard great things about Scott Cunningham. I read two chapters of the book the first day i received it and realized how great of an author he is. I live in a rural area in houston, texas so finding other wiccans will be dificult. I know im going to enjoy reading this book. R.I.P Scott Cunningham.
