Movie synopsis

Neil LaBute's THE WICKER MAN stars Nicholas Cage as Edward Malus, a policeman thrust into some dangerous detective work by a series of strange events that begin with a horrific car crash. This incident leaves the cop haunted, with images of the accident replaying in his heavily medicated mind. Edward's hiatus from work is interrupted when he receives a mysterious letter from his ex-fiancé, pleading with him to help find her missing daughter, Rowan. Against his better judgment, Edward travels to the remote, privately owned island of Summerisle, home to a close-knit, secretive community with a clear dislike for outsiders. Considering Edward an intruder, the Sisters of Summerisle offer little information regarding the missing girl. Edward is at a loss, finding even his ex-love Willow to be little help. With vacant eyes and a strange, listless way about her, Willow should be the first of many red flags to send Edward running. But in firm horror-movie tradition, the seasoned cop throws caution to the winds, staying in the place longer than seems smart. This 2006 remake veers away from the 1973 film in several key ways. For one, it replaces the original's eerily upbeat folk soundtrack with a tasteful Angelo Badalamenti score. With a mild PG-13 rating, the 2006 version is relatively tame compared to the original. While the 1973 film freely mixed pornographic elements with horror themes and musical numbers, the new film confines itself to horror, abandoning that strange mixture of genres that made Anthony Shaffer's film a cult classic. While LaBute's film adds a back-story and romantic interest, it requires equal suspension of disbelief. Despite their differences, both films end in the same disturbing way, leaving an indelible image that may haunt viewers long after the credits roll.

"[The film] does exert an eerie power....THE WICKER MAN has just enough enigma and weirdness that it gradually stirs to life."

The Wicker Man

The Wicker Man really wasn't anything I thought it was going to be.

Nicholas Cage plays a policeman who gets a bad start from the get-go. He witnesses the firey death of two people in the beginning of the movie. He is ultimately put on administrative duties to be able to cope with what had happened and is contacted by his ex-fiance who is now living on a remote island and needs his help looking for her missing daughter. Cage spends the rest of the movie being led on a wild goose chase on an island full of defiant and demented women who need someone to sacrifice for their fall harvest.

First off, I am a huge Nicholas Cage fan, but his acting was a little off in this movie. It had no feeling, especially when he was "reconnecting" his romance with his ex. Too many things went unanswered for me, like why the men on the island didn't speak? Little by little, you lose interest during the movie until you get to a horrific ending that's less intense than the director meant to portray. They left the edges a little rough and could have made everyone happy with an alternate ending on the dvd, but it was nothing more than a little bit of extras cut out, probably because of time restrictions.

If it is still something you want to see, don't waste too much money buying it and just rent it. At least then you can take it back to the video store and complain about how bad it was and they'll give you a refund.

THE WICKER MAN (2006, DVD)

This movie I would have to say is pretty good. It keeps you wondering until the end. This is one movie you will not figure out like you can with alot of movies. It is about a woman contacting her ex which he is a cop played by Nicolas Cage, and she left many him years before without explanation but anyway she contacts him to get his help to find her missing daughter and he goes to help, and ends up finding out the missing little girl is his daughter but the towns people try and make it like the little girl never existed but he figures out she really does, and does everything he can to find her but it turns out to be a big twist in the end it turn out to a trap but I will say no more because I do not want to give up the whole movie but it is a very good movie it will keep you in suspense until the very end. This is a DVD I am glad I have to add to my collection. I will give it a 4.5 stars out of 5, and the only reason I do not give it a five is because I am a big fan of Nicolas Cage, and I do not like what happens to him in the end.

A Mysterious Let Down

Created: 17/11/08
Oh come on Nicholas Cage what were you thinking?..I love Mr. Cages movies, but this one was horrible..Cage plays a nice guy Cop who witnesses what he believes to be the horrible death of a young woman and her little Girl..as his nightmares grow worse he finds out the woman and the little girl never existed...or did they? A few days maybe weeks later he gets a letter from his ex begging for his help in finding her missing daughter..he doesn't find out until much later she's also his daughter..what happens next I admit I did not see coming at all, but this film still disappoints esxpecially if you are a Nicholas Cage fan..I hated the ending and well the entire movie..though it does start out pretty good it loses its appeal once it gets going good which is a sad thing for any movie..the only thing this movie has going for it is Nicholas Cage! I give this film 2 bars out of 5..

All I can Say is What The...?
I was intrigued by the commercials & Fortunatly Rented this. Heck I was excited to find out there is an alternate ending. But Boy oh Boy what is Nicholas Cage getting himself into!!!
Ofcourse we all know He is the perfect cop! Here he is a cop who witnesses the death of a child... He thinks. Later on... He receives a letter from a lady who seems to be connected with him someway. Turns out to be his X-gal. She is desperatly seeking help to find her child. Being the great guy he is, He shows up on their island, Unwanted. Doesnt even seem to connect with this woman he came to help. He keeps finding clues about this girl. Is she dead , Not Dead. Practicly through-out the movie Not much sense is being made of anything. You pick up a bit here & there but nothing substantial. All you know is these are freaking Crazy people with a secret! That Community wants him Badly!!!

Don't Buy it! Rent it, Watch it & Drop your mouth when you see the both of the Horrid Ending!
And you thought the Good Guy always Wins!!

Mugging Middle Aged Women For Bearsuits...

Created: 09/01/07
Pros: Nicolas Cage in a bearsuit
A Large "Wicker Man"
Middle aged women mobbing Nicolas Cage

Cons: Nicolas Cage in a bearsuit.
A weak and confusing ending

Cage's acting woes continue in this remake of the classic British horror flick, "The Wicker Man"

Cage plays a cop with a tortured soul who's lured to an island by his ex to help locate her daughter.

Upon arriving, he's greeted by a violent matriarchal society. Chaos flows from there.

If director 's intent was to make fun of all those British horror fans, he's a master of his craft. But I really don't think that was the idea.

I expected a lot more from actor Nicolas Cage and the great Ellen Burstyn (The Exorcist)but we can't always get what we want.

If you want to have a really good laugh AT a movie. Rent this one and go nuts. You'll be rolling when Nicolas Cage gets mobbed by an army of middle aged woman and beaten senseless. Not meant to be funny, but it really was.
