Movie synopsis

IN THEATERS APRIL 14, 2006This animated feature tells the tale of a lion, raised in captivity in New York, who is accidentally "returned" to Africa., Ryan, a lion cub, worships his father, Sampson (Kiefer Sutherland), the brawny, brave, uncontested king of a New York City zoo. The film opens as Ryan listens adoringly as Sampson recounts yet another tale of roaring wildebeests into submission on the African savannah. While the zoo animals cavort, Ryan slips into a metal crate bound overseas for a chance to see "the wild" for himself. Now Sampson, with the help of his loyal friends Benny the squirrel (James Belushi), Nigel the koala bear (Eddie Izzard), Bridget the giraffe (Janeane Garafalo), and Larry the snake (Richard Kind), must brave the New York City jungle and then the actual jungle to save his son from the clutches of a crazed wildebeest with aspirations to carnivorousness (William Shatner). To make things worse, Sampson confesses that his heroic stories were fabrications; he's completely lost in his wild surroundings, unable to fight off a rabid poodle or eat a sassy hyrax.Since ANTZ hit the cineplexes in 1993, computer-animated films about chatty animals have proliferated, but THE WILD is perhaps the first that is heavily influenced by its immediate predecessors, taking a little plot from MADAGASCAR, adding healthy doses of the ICE AGE films, and borrowing heavily from the father-son sentiments of THE LION KING (the animals actually pass a Times Square theater playing THE LION KING). However, originality isn't the draw here: it's the world-class voice-acting by Hollywood heavies, and the non-stop slapstick antics that will have children screaming with delight. Amid all the ridiculousness, parents will appreciate the wry asides by Eddie Izzard's koala bear.

Editorial reviews

"THE WILD is filled with softness and texture....It allows for inspired voice work for Eddie Izzard as a snooty koala bear and William Shatner as a menacing wildebeest..."
New York Times - Jeannette Catsoulis (04/14/2006)

"[I]t has some truly spectacular animation....Williams here creates backdrops so dense you can all but feel them pressing in."
Los Angeles Times - Michael Wilmington (04/14/2006)

3 stars out of 5 -- "The animation is better, the jokes intended for your children are better, the jokes intended for you and not your children are much better, the songs are better, and it's more fun."
Total Film - Tim Cogshell (06/01/2006)

Very Similar to Madagascar - But I liked Madagascar...

Created: 11/10/06
The wild is strikingly similar to Madagascar, both starting the films about domesticated zoo animals located in the New York Central Park Zoo. The story plot revolves around a young lion cub named Ryan who runs away from the Zoo because he feels inferior to his mighty father Samson the Lion King...
The rest of the movie takes on a Lion King / Finding Nemo feel with the Father/Son search & rescue storyline. The plot seems fairly repetitive if you have seen any number of animated films similar to this one but who doesn't love an old fashioned family bonding disney?
The plot is backed by some fairly decent humor between the squirrel and giraffes love quarrel as well as Larry the very slow minded snake.
The animation in the movie is actually really good. It is a lot better than madagascar which has a sort of cartoonish look to it.

All in all, the movie has a lot of similarities with all of the animations that have come out in the past few years but if you have liked them then you will probably like this one as well. Should have enough action and body humor to keep your kids entertained and has enough adult humor for the parents as well.

hope this was helpful...
Aloha,
Trent McKell

The voices for the animals are played by the following:
Samson - Kiefer Sutherland
Benny - Jim Belushi
Nigel - Eddie Izzard
Bridget - Janeane Garofalo
Kazar - William Shatner
Larry - Richard Kind
Ryan - Greg Cipes

Izzard to the rescue..

Created: 22/09/06
Before I sat down to watch this film I was sure that It would be madagascar redone,I didn't have high expectations.
Now that I've seen it let me say I was Right.... and wrong.
This movie was easily madagascar redone with a few exceptions. So that I was right about. BUT..
I was wrong to have low expectations for this film.It was better then madagascar in 100 ways, but mostly due to the wonderful voice talents in this film. They really help make this movie,William Shatner pulls out the best part of his life showing his really dark side..I was amazed.

But if you have seen any of the Trailers you know already that This movie's Highest points are Eddie Izzard as the Kola. He is a riot with his own izzard style he makes this movie pee your pants funny..
Without him this movie would have been insanely dull. He really breathes fresh air into this movie.
Izzard fans will be jumping with joy over this movie and everyone else will become Izzard fans after you see his 3 mins in the Special Features section.
Over all this is a good film.Check it out you might be surprised..

Good Disney Animated Movie

Created: 26/07/06
Although, not among the best of Disney's animated movies (you got to admit they have a lot to live up to), but it is still a great effort. It does have some similarities with Madagascar, but the animation is way better and the plot it different enough to not make it boring. I found it to be a funny movie with the zoo animals suddenly out of their zoo environment trying to find Samson (nicknamed "The Wild") the lion's son. My favorite scene is near the beginnning where after hours the animals get together and have a turtle curling competition. The is a movie that the kids and adults can enjoy, although the kids are more likely to want to watch it again than the adults.

Cute, but not great.

Created: 09/03/08
I bought this because my 2-year-old son is obsessed with animals - we make weekly trips to our local zoo. On one of our zoo trips, they were handing out promo fliers for this movie. Up to this point, his favorite (as in watched every single day sometimes 3 times) was Madagascar. Once he saw it, he became a fan because of the variety of animal characters. So I reached out to eBay and got the dvd at a very reasonable price. Turns out, he loves it, simply because it has so many different animal characters. In my personal opinion, the movie is a pretty big copycat of two better movies- Finding Nemo and Madagascar. While the animation is fairly good, it simply cannot compete with these 2 modern classics. The storyline is basically that of Nemo, but with the setting of Madagascar. It's fine for kids, but not nearly as entertaining as the other two.

My 2 year old loves the characters

Created: 31/05/07
The Wild is a different story, the animation is excellent but the actually story lacking any real substance. Young children may be facinated by the animals and animation, however the story line will bore you.
My 2 year old son loves the characters, however if you're children are a little older and can understand more of the story they may be bored and lose interest quickly.

Not very highly recommended
