The Wild Geese

An All-star cast heads this movie of Roger Moore (Octopussy, Moonraker,
Gold, many 007 movies, etc); Richard Burton (Night of the Iguana, Beckett,
Where Eagles Dare, etc) and Richard Harris (Unforgiven, Patriot Games,
A Man called Horse, etc). In the movie, A British conglomerate sends
a group of aging mercenaries into the African wilderness to rescue an
influential political leader and advance its own business interests.
Problems arise when the mercenaries accomplish their mission but the
company decides to strike a deal with the enemy, an oppressive military
dictator. The action comes fast and furious afterwords as the mercenaries
decide to set things right-and get what they were promised. The director
here is Andrew McLaglen - and he already has a slew of BIG hits in his
name (Sahara, Ffolkes, Chisum, The Undefeated, Sea Wolves, etc) and adds
another one here with plenty of gunpowder and excitement. He certainly
gets great acting jobs from all the stars as well as co-stars Hardy
Kruger (many German an British movies) and Patrick Allen (British Star also).
If you like war action, adventure or simply action movies- you should like
this one. If you have watched DOGS OF WAR or SEA WOLVES and enjoyed those
movies, you will most likely enjoy this one also--especially SEA WOLVES as
this movie kind of goes as the land version of the SEA WOLVES sea adventure.
This is not a great movie-but it is on the highest level of GOOD and most
people will certainly get a full nights entertainment out of this flix.

Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Roger Moore, Hardy Kruger and Stewart Granger!
What a hoot! This is a man's movie!
Richard Burton Leads a group of mercenaries on a precision strike to free a kidnapped African Leader [Winston Ntshona]. All goes well until wealthy businessman Sir Edward Matherson[Granger]double crosses the group.
What follows is an action packed escape from darkest, war torn Africa.
The action is nonstop, the script is formula and the ending is expected, but the real treat is to watch these powerhouse British actors as they play off each other while making one of this reviewers favorite movies.
Add a supporting cast of who's who in English theatre, Jack Watson, Kenneth Griffin, Frank Finlay..........and you get the best that Britain has to offer.
check it out. If you like a night of in your face action and the good guys finally win, although with reservations, you need this flick!

The Wild Geese is a great African adventure from 1978
Created: 06/05/07
This movie is worth an evening. Its about a group of aging British and South African mercenaries that are hired to go out into the African bush and rescue a deposed African President of an ‘unnamed’ country and bring him out. The story goes through their training and mission. The mission is ruthless and goes perfect, until the mercenaries are left behind when their employer makes a deal with the new dictator.
The story is somewhat dated with the ‘stiff upper lip’ still firmly in place in this film, but its also great fun. With Roger Moore (James Bond), Richard Burton & Richard Harris (Who played Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies) the cast is outstanding and Stewart Granger as the businessman who betrays them and is truly a man you like to hate.

Great movie on mercenaries and the Cold War in Africa. It's got a great cast, and the action scenes are excellent. The movie touches on aparthied in South Africa, and how the ex-Colonial powers tried to influence their ex-colonies.

The Wild Geese (2005, DVD

This nowadays would be considered a very 'dated' movie, but having seen it when it first came out (yes, I am one of the 'older' guys) it was 'state of the art' action. There are mercenaries nowaday much more capable of killing with extremely efficient weapons than what they did in this movie and with a lot more 'flash and bang' with all todays special effects and CGI. But the story was plausible and the 3 actors that made it worth while watching. The 3 actors, Richard Harris, Roger Moore and Richard Burton, were a pleasure to see in one movie. All 3 were great in their time and Richard Harris and Richard Burton are sadly missed, they were great actors. Roger Moore is gracefully aging and still looks fit at the ripe age of 71.
But would I recommend the movie? Absolutely!
