Willard (DVD, 2003, Platinum Series)

Glen Morgan, Crispin Glover|Theatrical release: 2003 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Glen Morgan's WILLARD stars Crispin Glover in the title role as a socially awkward loner who lives with his ailing mother (Jackie Burroughs) in a decrepit old house. Trapped between duties at home and working at a dreary company formerly owned by his deceased father, Willard leads a bleak and routine existence until he befriends Socrates, an albino rat living in the basement. This new friendship leads to an affinity for the ever-growing rodent population under his house, and soon Willard discovers the rats will do anything he tells them. When Willard is pushed too far by his bullying boss (R. Lee Ermey), he decides to use his four-legged companions to get revenge.A perfect pairing of actor and character, Glover is ideal as Willard in this Burton-esque remake of the 1971 cult horror film. Widely known as an introvert and eccentric in real life, Glover expertly transfers his quirks to Willard in a giddily affected performance that ranges from subdued to outraged. Ermey (of FULL METAL JACKET) and Laura Elena Harring (of MULHOLLAND DRIVE) provide excellent support as his dictatorial boss and concerned coworker, respectively, but the true costars of this thriller are two rodents, the affectionate Socrates and the imposing, cat-sized Ben. Although some of the rat scenes are rendered with animatronics or CGI animation, the majority of Glover's scenes with Socrates and Ben involve real animal actors who convey distinct personalities and factor heavily into the story. The clever and darkly comic script even manages to bring in an element of the original film by featuring photos and paintings of Bruce Davison, star of the earlier film, as Willard's dead father. And be sure to listen for both a young Michael Jackson and Glover himself singing WILLARD's adopted theme song, "Ben."

i hate this movie and i plan to never watch it again. ***but why 4 stars?*** it's like: i don't like soccor. i don't want to play soccer. i don't want to see soccor. but... i think soccer is a great sport for kids-- i still don't want to see it.
i was impressed with this on all aspects. the acting was really good. the same with the direction, pace, filming, ... what repulses me about this film is that willard is a pathetic creepy guy and it's his own fault. yeah, they try to blame his upbringing. but, he's now the master of his world and it's been that way for many years. he continues to be a jerk and allows the same things to happen over and over. he's pathetic and 'ugly' on the inside. here's the overview:
his family had a business. it was all left to him. due to his lack of responsibility he let it slip out of his hands. because he was part of the original owners family he's allowed to continue working. his job performance is substandard and neglectful. he recieves multiple warnings from his boss that: 'willard, you better shape up and start taking your job seriously, or i'll be forced to let you go.' he never listens and he treats the mansion, he lives in, with the same neglect. he decides to get rid of some rats at the mansion. when he gets one, instead of torturing it [which is what you'd expect from a person, like him] he nurtures it. with this friendship the other rats accept him. but... one rat, named ben, has a problem with the new hierarchy. willard uses the rats to do his dirty work and ben's jealousy and or social greed sets the out of control train on the tracks.
the term i use to discribe this film is: 'ugly'. you feel dirty after watching it. you don't like or simpathize with willard. you, probably, won't care if willard lives or dies. not all movies are 'feel good' movies. this is a 'feel disgusted' movie. but as shear quality goes: this is as good as the re-make of 'psycho' [which i recommend]. its great for what it is. like 'casey at the bat', when all is said and done: 'there is no happiness in muddville.' but it was a great game.

This has been my favorite movie since the day I watched it for the first time in fifth grade. I'm not sure why. Crispin Glover plays Willard, a very relatable character who will touch anyones heart. This is a story of a lonely man found his place among rats-- truly touching.

I love this movie so much. If your looking for something a little weird and a little scary then this movie is for you.

Willard becomes friends with all the rats that live in the basement. Word travels fast and soon hes got the friendship and trust of over 600 rats if not more. But one turns on him when he yells at it and so does the rest. They kill everyone in sight including his mother....

Great movie. Everyone should see it :D

I didn't hate this movie and I thought the idea was...meh.

The movie is just straight up freaky and weird, hard to follow and confusing at times...mabey its just the part where he talks to rats and they listen to him.

The acting though for the main character was convincing enough though.

I just didnt really enjoy watching this movie and wouldnt reccommend it.
