Movie synopsis

WIND CHILL takes the conventions of the haunted house film and transplants them to a dangerous stretch of road where the unfortunate victims of prior events haunt those unwise enough to drive on it. Director Greg Jacobs's film is the tale of an unnamed young student (Emily Blunt) at a Northeastern College in need of a ride home to Delaware for Christmas break. Deciding to check the ride board, she finds a fellow student (Ashton Holmes, A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE) going her way, though an impending blizzard promises to make their ride treacherous. Very early into their journey, he opts for a scenic route, only to be run off the road by a reckless driver. Stuck in the snow, with no cell phone service, the two are forced to get to know each other under the worst circumstances as they learn of the area's frightening history and try to save themselves from perishing in the cold.A sparkling addition to the realm of holiday-themed fright films, WIND CHILL sidesteps gratuitous gore and murderous Santas in favor of chilling images of ghostly figures in a snowy landscape. Creating ample suspense with a story that unfolds largely within a car, director Gregory Jacobs (CRIMINAL) keeps the abrupt jolts to a minimum, relying on mood and a compounding sense of dread. Writers Joseph Gangemi and Steven Katz give us two characters--realized through fine work by Blunt and Holmes--whom we learn to care for as we watch them endure a realistically horrific situation. Claustrophobic, understated, and painted with a snowy glow of cool blue, this is a classy, spooky safe haven from gratuitous gore and hastily made remakes and sequels. Though the name connotes discomfort, WIND CHILL is a more likely to be a breath of fresh air for discriminating genre fans.

Chilling story--keeps you on the edge of your seat!

Created: 25/04/08
This was an absolutely chilling (no pun intended with the title :D ) story that was very creepy and even partially romantic (in my opinion). I thought it was going to be just another cheap B movie from Blockbuster, but I found myself encaptured by the characters and everything they experienced. I was deeply touched (if not a little creeped out) by how the main characters met, as the guy seemed a bit stalkerish, but it turned out he was just a sweet, hopeless romantic who knew just a *little* too much about his driving partner whom he was giving a ride to to her home in Delaware for Christmas. The events that began happening to them, however, brought them closer together as they ended up in an accident, causing them to have to survive a way-below-zero night in the middle of nowhere. Then to make matters worse for them, there were ghosts haunting the area in which they were stranded, harassing and terrifying them. Without giving away too much, I was heartbroken by the sad ending, but it was sweet nonetheless. I thought the acting was excellent on the part of every character involved in the movie. The girl getting the ride home started out as a cold b*tch but she softened as she realized she had no choice but to befriend her classmate driver, whom she'd never met, and try to survive the cold and the hauntings. I have watched it a dozen times already and decided to buy it. You can really empathize with the main characters if you're from up north and you understand what a below-zero wind chill feels like and how dangerous it can be to try to survive it. There was no cell-phone reception in the valley in which they were stranded, which made the events that followed perfect and realistic. Your heart really ends up going out to these characters and you just fall in love with them. You also learn interesting things about the movie if you watch the 'making of' portion of it in the special features section. The actors weren't just *acting* like they were freezing--they actually WERE!

The *only* thing I wasn't fond of about the movie (besides the devastatingly sad ending) was that the characters didn't have names. I noticed that they hadn't introduced themselves when they met, and about halfway through, I wondered why they never called each other anything. The director/creator was very proud of that effect of not giving the characters names, but I found too many instances in which a name seemed necessary instead of referring to each other as "Hey."

I am very happy to now have this movie in my collection, and I'm glad I had a chance to write my review about it. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did, and if not, to each his own, right? LOL Go rent it and check it out...but don't watch it alone! MUAH HA HA HA HA HA HAAAAAAA! JK Enjoy, and thank you for reading my review.

Sincerely,
Gretchen Molannen

Perfect Film

Created: 22/02/10
The atmosperhic environment within this film lends to it's appeal and entertainment value. The "snow" and "cold" become characters as the plot thickens and escalates.

This film contains super casting (Emily Blunt).
Clint Mansell does a great job with the score.
This film has the best cinematography I've seen in years thanks to DOP Dan Laustsen.
The screenplay is riddled with convolution and suspense.

This film is an experience. A rare gem in a time with so many "duds".

Good rental/dvd to buy

I really love this movie. Its considered under the horror genre. To me, its more suspense.

There is no blood and guts gore as is associated with horror. This is more mental and sit on the edge of your seat suspense with a few scary scenes.

I would recommend you rent this or buy it for under 10 bucks. You can't go wrong with it.
