Movie synopsis

Herman Wouk's THE WINDS OF WAR is a sweeping historical epic about a U.S. naval officer (Robert Mitchum) who, along with his globe-spanning family, plunges into the firestorm of World War II and witnesses the incredible behind-the-scenes worlds of Hitler, Churchill, Roosevelt, Mussolini, and Stalin. This acclaimed television mini-series features stellar talent--including Ali McGraw, John Houseman, Polly Bergen, David Dukes, and Ralph Bellamy--and was shot on location in six different countries, lending authenticity to its tale of global military involvement.

Winds of War (1989) VHS seven tape series

Created: 01/06/06
I had wanted to buy this video series for many years, but the price was always prohibitive. Recently I saw it on listed on Ebay shopping. The price for the used set was $60, however it said that I could make an offer. It seemed to be a long shot, but I decided I would offer $25. A few hours later I received a notice that my offer had been accepted. A few days later the video arrived safely at our home and we found it to be excellent. The video deals with the years preceeding World War II---the rise of Hitler to power and takes you through the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The entire series is about a navy family and by the end of the series, you feel like they have become your very close friends. The series lacks nothing. We already owned the 'War and Remembrance' series which is the sequel to "Winds of War." If you like war movies that take you behind the scenes, this is definitely a series you will enjoy. "Winds of War" is seven tapes which run for approximately twelve hours. I would recommend this video to anyone.

This is an outstanding series. The acting is Oscar class. If anyone is not aware of the horror of WWII, they need to watch this series.

I read the book several years ago but missed the mini-series on TV. I was glad to get the videos which follow the book precisely. The cast of characters was exactly how I pictured them while reading the book.Highly recommend to any history ,or WW2 buff.
