    Album Notes
The Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass); Brent Mydland (keyboards); Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann (drums).Additional personnel: Branford Marsalis (soprano & tenor saxophones).Recorded live in 1989 & 1990.By 1990, the Grateful Dead were something of ever-present psychedelic juggernaut on the American landscape, pausing only when crisis (like the erratic health of Jerry Garcia) forced them to take a break from touring. With their state-of-the-art sound technology, the addition of a second keyboardist, and frequent guest soloists, the band's sound grew even bigger. And the set lists became even more eclectic as the band added new cover songs to their set, including '60s nuggets like Traffic's "Dear Mr. Fantasy," which is included on this live set. Although Garcia has trouble reaching some of the high notes here, his inimitable guitar-playing still retains its allure, especially on "Althea," one of the finer songs to emerge from the Dead's later albums.WITHOUT A NET features some nifty tenor and soprano saxophone riffing by Branford Marsalis on the extended jam "Eyes of the World." There are also stirring versions of "Looks Like Rain," a longtime concert classic by Bob Weir, and the medley ""China Cat Sunflower" and "I Know You Rider," another perennial Deadhead favorite.

I love the overall sound quality which is lacking in some of the older live recordings, possibly indicative of higher quality of recording equipment available during this part of the Dead's Career, which is noticeably lacking on some of the older live recordings.

My personal favorite version of 'One more Saturday Night,' as Jerry's lead just seems to be the way it always should have been, and a very nice, much needed, high quality, newer recording of 'Help - Slip - Frank', and a good cover of 'Dear Mr. Fantasy', which they didn't play that much. Excellent versions of 'Eyes of the World,' featuring a guest appearance by Wynton Marsalis, and a version of 'Bird Song,' which I like even more than the Acoustic version of 'Reckoning,' which is far superior to any of the Dick's picks versions I've heard, combine with unusual and unique versions of old and new songs, into A CD which is an essential for any comprehensive Grateful Dead collection, in my opinion.

    Another GD Live recording

    Created: 10/08/06
Not bad, but not among the best of the seemingly millions of Grateful Dead Live recordings. What makes this a little better than average (relative to other dead recordings) is the inclusion of Branford Marsalis on sax.

what i love about it is the improv of jerry and the boys!I don't like that the concert is pieced together from a whole bunch of different shows
