Movie synopsis

This unnerving remake adds further story and character depth to Herschell Gordon Lewis's bizarre 1970 shocker. When wastrel Edmund Bigelow (Kip Pardue), a trust-fund baby and part-time amateur journalist, attends one of the Magnificent Montag's shows, he is stricken with awe and terror along with the rest of the audience as the magician butchers female crowd volunteers on stage before the lights finally go up and the women are revealed to still be alive and intact. Unlike the rest of the audience, however, Edmund just can't let the unexplainable occurrence go. He is only further bewildered by the realization that the girls do indeed eventually turn up dead and in the same horrific condition in which they appear during Montag's shows. Is the Magnificent Montag displacing time? Is he in fact a murderer? Are his secrets even more unnerving than anyone could ever imagine? Edmond takes a headlong journey into an utterly depraved world of morbid brutality, carnivalesque Grand Guignol, and primitive drug use as he habitually attends the mysterious magician's performances, losing his sanity along the way. This head-trip of a movie sports of a cast of seasoned veterans of the disturbed and macabre, including Bijou Phillips (HOSTEL: PART II), Jeffrey Combs (RE-ANIMATOR), Brad Dourif (CHILD'S PLAY), Joshua John Miller (NEAR DARK), and the inimitably bizarre Crispin Glover as the Magnificent Montag.

This movie really steps over the line.

In taking into account the pros and cons about a film, I just first usually ask myself, "Self, do I ever want to watch something like this again or even recommend this film for anyone to watch?" If the answer is no then I'm pretty sure that it's not a keeper.

The movie was way too macabre for me in parts and serve's no redeeming purpose other than just pure entertainment. However, this type of entertainment was quite grotesque, morbid, sick, and boderline pornographic. The frontal nudity thing added to the murderous acts was just way to much for me and I'm sure for most viewers as well. Not to mention the stage hand that ate maggots and live rats heads. Boy that sounds yummy and pure fun.

These types of movies always leave me feeling sick with my head spinning away from reality. The psychotic nature of the film and the mind altering drug theme all play into the surreal feeling that make you just want to turn the thing off and watch something else.

The immoral treatment of women in films has gotten way out of hand and serves no purpose whatsoever. It doesn't even have any explainable reason why this is even in the film to begin with except to make it so grungy and reprehensible that you'll want to keep watching just to see if might get any worst. How far down the path of hell does a film need to take it's viewers is the real question. This onstage diabolical supposed magic using predetermined females from audience to murder onstage and then the miraculously reappear untouched was surely the rave of these spectators. Edmond (Kip Pardue) stumbles around with his paper bag, trying to figure this out but he becomes mesmerized with finding out the answers to this bizarre trick then, afterward, girls die deaths very similar to the stage death.

Montag the Magnificent was one of Crispen Glover's most disturbed characters besides Willard. We have many comments about Glover's own feeling about these types of film. He mentions the following subjects:
"I think what eccentricity can represent in terms of the fear it engenders is a challenge to what is already considered right or good by people who have invested a certain amount into their life and livelihood that is not eccentric, but centric. If there's a challenge to that, that can make people concerned that either what is considered a safe way of living or a good way of living may be pulled out from under them. I can understand that. That's why countercultural film movements are important since it's lacking in the culture right now. There's an idea that there's value to an alternate point of view, but everything that's presented in the media is procultural, and it makes people nervous when there hasn't been a true discussion of alternate points of view. There's no general discussion in the media. [On being called eccentric] Eccentric doesn't bother me. "Eccentric" being a poetic interpretation of a mathematical term meaning something that doesn't follow the lines-that's OK.
This county has it's own propaganda, but it's very effective because people don't realize that it's propaganda. And it's subtle, but it's actually a much stronger propaganda machine than the Nazis had but it's funded in a different way. With the Nazis it was funded by the government, but in the United States, it's funded by corporations & they only want things to happen that will make people want to buy stuff. So whatever that is, then that is considered okay & good, but that doesn't necessarily mean it serve people

This is a really hard movie to review, fans of the original may well be disapointed, fans of horror may well be frustrated, fans of gore however should be quite pleased.
The biggest problem with the wizard of gore is that it tries to be a bit too clever for its own good, thorwing in confusing twist after confusing twist and some lame explantions, this ultimately leaves it being a bit of a confusing mess, if only theyd have gone a slightly more standard horror route, although saying that the movie probably would have really sucked then, huh damned if you do, dmaned if you dont I guess.
I personally enjoyed it, just still not too sure why? my girlfriend on the other hand, who is a big fan of horror hated it.
Crispin glover is great, as is (albeit in small roles) Brad dourif and Jeffrey combs and the addition of many suicide girls is a treat worthy of the watch alone, plus it also has some pretty impressive visuals.
Give it a go, who knows you might find plenty to enjoy, just dont surprised if you not sure why.

Wizard of Gore

Created: 17/09/10
I am a very big horror film fan & admire actor Crispin Glover very much. This is a re-make of a very, very low-budget '70's movie that I have never seen. So, I'm not passing judgement on the origional.
Perhaps, I am such a big fan of Glover that I set my expectations too high. I thought that his performance in the "Willard" re-make should've gotten him an Oscar nomination. Expect no such performance from him here.
Jeffrey Combs & Brad Dourif also appear in this. I'm not sure why. I would suppose it is good to make several thousand dollars to shoot one 4 minute scene.
The shame of this movie is the waste of Glover's God-given talent. He tries his best, but there was nothing he could do to dig this piece out of the litter box. His future efforts will be far better.

I thought this movie would be somewhat like "Bloodsucking Freaks" which was a movie filled with gore, blood and beautiful women. This movie was no such movie. It was a confusing movie and I probably should watch it again to get it, but I dont think I could sit through it again. I will admit, if you can stay with it long enough, it somewhat comes together in the last 20 minutes, but till that point, you will be totally bewildered and not at all happy about it. The Wizard of Gore actor did a good performance, but he wasnt enough to save this movie. Ive seen better alot better movies and alot better special effects. Its a poorly done movie, with way too many loose ends, too many twists and it simply doesnt make alot of sense. I think you fel slighted after watching this and feel it did not live up to the trailer at all.
