Synopsis
Abe's most celebrated novel tells the story of Niki Jumpei, an amateur entomologist who is taken prisoner when he enters a remote town on his search for a rare beetle. He is imprisoned at the bottom of one of the sand pits that comprise the strange village, along with a young widow who is being punished for an unknown transgression. Niki is forced to help her with her Sisyphean task of shoveling away the sand that threatens to engulf the town, and eventually, in the process, he comes to accept his new identity, finding the answer to his own question: "Are you shoveling to survive, or surviving to shovel?" Abe's brilliant, claustrophobic, mysteriously existential tale is remarkable for its hypnotic descriptions of the sand that dominates the book. The novel was made into an acclaimed movie in 1964, for which Abe wrote the screenplay.

The Paradox of Life

Created: 06/06/06
I had seen Teshigahara's great film and decided to read the book to clear up a few things that I found unclear. The book doesn't necessarily clear them up but does add some different dimensions to the experience of the film (Kobo Abe collaborated with Teshigahara, so the film also reflects his vision). It's powerful evocation of the existential dilemma--how can one find a way to live in the seemingly hopeless situation in which one finds oneself? An illuminating reading experience, with the sand as a powerful metaphor.

Really Lame Read

Created: 21/02/11
I had to read this for my history of southeast asia course at Ball State University, and I have never been more bored at the introduction of the book. It seems like every other word is "sand". This is a short book with large print, but the plot is so boring you will cringe everytime you pick the book up to read it.
