Women of Faith: The Artist Collection provides a good selection of previously released songs from some of the most popular female artists in contemporary Christian music. Compilation discs are notoriously uneven affairs and the song choices for this collection repeat that cliché by switching through string and choir-laden pop, live gospel, and acoustic guitar-driven folk/rock. Artists fresh to the genre are loaded onto the front of the disc with the laid-back groove of Ginny Owens' "Free" proving there is fertile musical ground being explored in the CCM world. The second half is burdened by a variety of ballads, from CeCe Winans' theatrical "Alabaster Box" to Kathy Troccoli's quietly affectionate "All for the Life of Me," the latter providing a light respite from the high drama. Surprisingly, what's missing from this set is Women of Faith's central theme, which is to help "women grow spiritually, emotionally, and in relationships." With only Chonda Pierce's empty nest/divorce song, "Hold on Tighter," reflecting WOF's message, The Artist Collection is simply that -- a collection of songs performed by women; and although that's not a bad thing, had songs been selected that were more lyrically in tune with the issues women face, this could have been a more powerful disc and a better way to represent the Women of Faith conferences. ~ Aaron Latham
