Movie synopsis

Michael Wadleigh's WOODSTOCK: THREE DAYS OF PEACE & MUSIC finds the best rock stars of the 1960s performing at the historic Woodstock Music and Art Fair, the most celebrated rock concert of all time. Shot over the course of three days in August 1969, the film conveys the unique spirit of the once-in-a-lifetime, communal event, and in turn, captures the mood of an entire era. Amazingly volatile, electrifying performances are included by such timeless artists as Richie Havens; Joan Baez; The Who; Sha Na Na; Joe Cocker; Country Joe and The Fish; Arlo Guthrie; Crosby, Stills and Nash; Ten Years After; Santana; Sly and the Family Stone; Jimi Hendrix; Canned Heat; John Sebastian; Jefferson Airplane; and Janis Joplin. In addition to the music, the film's historical relevance is what makes it such an important time capsule, thrillingly eternalizing the legendary event for generations to come. This digitally remastered, widescreen director's cut of the Academy Award-winning documentary features 40 minutes of footage not included in the original film, and was released in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the legendary music festival.

A TWO-DVD TIME TRIP.....WOW,COSMIC,MAN......

Created: 26/01/11
I saw the Woodstock movie on TV when I was a kid several times. Even the butchered-for-TV, old, red and grainy, molested-by-commercials movie on an old tube sscreen was a an absolute time trip. There, I saw rock music at it's finest - spiritually, intellectually, politically, socially....all that.

So, I was considering the fancy, drum-shaped DVD box set....but it didn't seem like there was much more there, only packaging. Maybe there is more. I don't know. I just wanted to see the film again. I copped this 2-DVD 2009 re-issue of the 1994 DVD instead new for $20. It clocks in at 3hrs 44mins. It looks and sounds great, considering the film they were working with....

I often wondered why Janis Joplin's performance wasn't in the original film I saw on TV. Well, it's worked into this Director's cut - and if you ask me, is worth the price of admission. After 42 years, her ghost can mop the floor with any singing diva you can name. AND - yay!!! - they included the bit where Hendrix stands there and riffs very strangely for about 8 minutes after Purple Haze, before the slower denoument. Voodoo Chile is included. OK - I'm happy. No clips of The Band or CCR for some reason.

Maybe they are waiting for 2019 and the 50th anniv so they can release a big box set of every damn minute of Woodstock that was filmed. No real 'special features' on this DVD. I was hoping for some added footage. But there's always You Tube.....

Yeah, R.I.P. old Woodstock Creatures. No wonder they're replacing you with computers and paranoia. You were right.

Not only is the music amazing, but the imagery is just as cool. It was really interesting to actually see AND hear the music, people and energy of the Woodstock. I'm definitely going to buy a copy for my Dad and Grandpa. The most exciting/entertaining part was Joe Cocker-- Joe Cocker is the man!

Beyond disapointing!!!!

Created: 16/06/10
How sad is it when your VHS audio quality blows away the newly released dvd version of same movie!!!!!! The editors etc who let this dvd be released with such a poor audio track, should be beaten! Its Woodstock!!! It contains once in a lifetime performances of world reknowned acts never to be seen again!! The excitement and aniticipation of finally getting to "HEAR" and see these acts on dvd quality is quickly shattered and generates a great feeling of disgust knowing that GREED was the greatest drive for producing this dvd. Exactly what the hippie generation was AGAINST!!! This dvd is an INSULT to all of the performers the producers have "pimped" for their own personal gain!!!!
