Movie synopsis

Any dog-lover would be a fool to pass up this charming dark comedy from director/screenwriter/actor Mike White (THE GOOD GIRL, SCHOOL OF ROCK, CHUCK AND BUCK). Famous for her iconic portrayal of Mary Katherine Gallagher, SNL alum Molly Shannon shows new range here as Peggy, a timid secretary whose whole life revolves happily around her adorable beagle, Pencil. When unspeakable tragedy strikes, Peggy is naturally overcome with grief. But at the same time, the loss of Pencil forces Peggy out of her shell and into the world of people. As a heartbroken Peggy faces pressure to cheer up from her friends and family, she is taken by the genuine empathy of her next door neighbor (John C. Reilly), even if she is appalled by his love of hunting. And just when Peggy thinks she's found a kindred spirit in a sexually ambiguous pet trainer (Peter Sarsgaard), the mixed signals and complexity that make up human nature get in the way. The more she observes her brother, her controlling sister-in-law (Laura Dern), and the supposedly normal but actually twisted life that they live, the more attractive the simpler, purer world of animals appears. Peggy soon realizes that she must follow her true passion and pave her own path, even if it involves a lie here or there in pursuit of a good cause. While White's offbeat sense of humor can be felt in every moment of the film, the story is also surprisingly sad and touching. Pencil's passing is up there with many of cinema's most heart-wrenching scenes, and Shannon's vulnerability as Peggy is quite moving. YEAR OF THE DOG should appeal to non-pet owners as well, as it boasts wonderful performances by Regina King as Peggy's well-meaning but sometimes clueless friend and coworker, along with Sarsgaard, Reilly, Dern, and Josh Pais as Peggy's testy boss. The film never ridicules Peggy or her love for animals, but defends it as valid, and just as true as any relationship between people.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"It's funny ha-ha but firmly in touch with its downer side, which means it's also funny in a kind of existential way."
New York Times - Manohla Dargis (04/13/2007)

"The amazing, translucent Shannon is fearless in exposing Peggy's naked sadness." -- Grade: A-
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (04/27/2007)

"[A] charming film that is neither saccharin nor sanctimonious."
Box Office - Tim Cogshell (06/01/2007)

4 stars out of 5 -- "White invites us to chuckle at his protagonist's perversities before slowly winning us round to her warped point of view...The writer-director's real talent is in showing that we're all freaks and geeks in one way or another..."
Total Film - Neil Smith (10/01/2007)

3 stars out of 5 -- "As a character study, it's compelling, and there are fantastic supporting turns from John C. Reilly and an excellent Laura Dern..."
Empire - Helen O'Hara (10/01/2007)

"[A] bright palette and tinkling music add to the absurdist tone....Sharp dialogue and some spot-on performances keep the irony subtle enough to work.."

Although this movie is slightly slapstick in nature, I recommend it highly for any animal lover. I was thrilled that Molly Shannon's character decided to follow her own heart at the movie's end. The song closed with the perfect song as well: Cat Stevens "I Love My Dog".

Dog Of A Movie: It Was Absolutely Arf-ul

Created: 02/06/10
Molly Shannon is capable of very credible comedy, but a tragedian she ain't. Dorothy Parker once wrote that in a certain movie Katharine Hepburn's emotions "...ran the gamut from A to B". I'm not sure that Ms. Shannon's dramatic range spans quite so far. The character she plays in "Year Of The Dog" is clearly meant to be an odd-ball. Basic idea is that her dog, about which she obsessed, dies. O.K. That's sad, and can be very traumatic. But Ms. Shannon played it like a zombie. Obviously forced crying. Zombie-like. So little emotion that if they hadn't shown what kind of animal died you'd almost be forced to conclude that it must have been nothing but a cat.
I paid $.99 for this movie. I paid too much.

if you've lost a pet in the last 5-10 years, be prepared to cry! it's one of those movies that kinda' just ends, but it's a good story. you go on a journey with her. definitely not a typical molly shannon movie! if you're an animal lover, you'll definitely like this movie.

This movie started out a bit oddly I must admit, but overall it is really great! Molly Shannon gives an excellent performance. I highly reccommend this movie if you are into offbeat comedies!
